60 Trophies, One State: Inside the 2026 New Mexico Entertainment Awards
New Mexico spent Sunday, July 12, doing something it doesn't do often enough: handing itself a trophy. The 2026 New Mexico Entertainment Awards took over the African American Performing Arts Center on the Expo New Mexico grounds, and by the end of the night the organization had given out honors across 60 categories spanning film, television, theater, comedy, dance — and, the reason we're here, music.
The music slate read like a who's-who of the rooms we cover. Dissolves took Rock. The Hunn1es won Alternative/Indie. TAJ claimed Metal, while Smoking Dolls took Punk — a fitting pair given how many Tuesday nights those genres split at Launchpad. Pupfish won Funk, Chris Dracup took Jazz/Blues, and Felix y Los Gatos — long one of the city's most joyful live draws — won Global Music. Drémon took Hip-Hop/Rap, Polynova won R&B, Mozzy Dee claimed the Americana/Folk/Bluegrass/Rockabilly catch-all, and Hooks & The Huckleberries rode off with Country & Western.
The night's most telling award might have been Top Musical Front Person, which went to Peach Onorato of No Manners — a nod to the person on the mic rather than the logo on the tour poster, which is exactly how a healthy local scene keeps its center of gravity at home. Funky Gatos took Top Cover Band, proof that Albuquerque still pays its dues-band rent, and spoken-word artist Kristin Patton reminded everyone that "entertainment" here has always been bigger than four-four time.
Why does a regional awards show matter to a music blog? Because the alternative to celebrating your own is watching your best acts treat Albuquerque as a launchpad in the pejorative sense — a place to leave. An annual ceremony that puts Dissolves, TAJ, and Felix y Los Gatos on the same stage, in front of the same industry, is the scene refusing to let that happen.
"The New Mexico Entertainment Awards exist to celebrate the incredible talent that calls our state home," executive producer Teresa Robinson said. It's a mission statement that could read as boilerplate anywhere else. Here, with 60 categories and a room full of working musicians who mostly still hold day jobs, it lands as something closer to a promise.
The homework for the rest of us is simple. These aren't names to admire in a press release and forget. They're names on marquees you can reach on a weeknight. Dissolves and The Hunn1es aren't touring through — they live here, which means the ticket is cheap and the room is close. The awards are the easy part. Showing up is the assignment.
Congratulations to every winner. Now get back to the clubs — we'll be at the merch table.
