There is nothing subtle about Chilkoot Charlie's, and thank god for that. This weekend the Spenard institution best known as "Koot's" is doing the most Koot's thing imaginable: celebrating Halloween in the middle of July, because who's going to stop them?

The event is called "Halloween in July: Ghouls Gone Wild," running Jul 18–19 at Chilkoot Charlie's (2435 Spenard Rd) — a two-night costume rager stacked with live bands, DJs and, per tradition, costume contests. The band bill runs The Robotz, Dreamcat, Natural High and Epic!, with DJs Akira, Juba, Dev and Militant working the decks between and around them. If that lineup means the difference between spandex and fake blood, well, that's the fun of a Halloween party unmoored from October.

Some context for the uninitiated, and for the tourists currently wandering in off a cruise excursion looking confused. Koot's has operated in Spenard since 1970, markets itself — accurately — as "10 bars under one roof," and features a genuine ice bar and floors that are, still, actual sawdust. It is the archetypal Anchorage dive, the kind of sprawling, many-roomed nightlife maze that a costume event was practically invented for. Ten bars is a lot of bars to lose your friends between. Add a Frankenstein costume and it's a whole evening.

Throwing a Halloween party now is a low-key genius move: the horror gag lands even harder when you're queuing for the ice bar at midnight and the sun's still loitering on the horizon. It's a very Alaskan inversion of a very lower-48 holiday, and Koot's is leaning all the way in with a multi-band, multi-DJ, two-night footprint rather than a single throwaway theme night.

Because a room this size committing two full nights, four bands and four DJs to an off-season gimmick is a signal about where Spenard's live-music energy sits this summer — not waiting politely for the downtown lots, but generating its own reasons to fill the place. In a season crowded with outdoor headliners and free lawn sets, Koot's is a reminder that the scene's oldest, weirdest, most stubbornly local rooms are still writing their own calendar.
