Bring the Dog, Bring the Kids: The Droptines Play Fanny Hill This Thursday

The single most democratic ticket in the Roaring Fork Valley costs exactly nothing, requires no reservation, and comes with a mountain view thrown in for free. Every Thursday through August 27, the Snowmass Free Concert Series sets up on Fanny Hill — the ski run that turns into a natural grass amphitheater in summer — and a touring band plays to a crowd of locals, second-homeowners, and sunburned tourists who wandered up from the village and got lucky. Doors, so to speak, at 5:30 p.m.; music at 6:30.

This Thursday, July 16, the headliner is The Droptines, an Americana outfit with Mark Nussmeier opening. Next week (July 23) brings Kolton Moore & The Clever Few, the Americana-blues-country band, with Tristan Trincado opening; the following Thursday (July 30) it's bluegrass from Clay Street Unit. The series is a genuine valley institution — organizers put its run at more than three decades of Thursdays. That longevity is the whole magic trick. A free weekly concert is easy to announce and hard to sustain; keeping one alive for a generation, with real touring talent instead of the same three cover bands, takes a town that actually wants it.

Which is the quiet argument Fanny Hill makes every week. Snowmass is a purpose-built ski resort — it did not accrue a music scene the organic way that a college town or a river city does. It decided to have one, on Thursdays, for free, and then it stuck with the decision long enough for the decision to become a tradition. Kids who grew up rolling down that grass slope to bluegrass are now bringing their own kids. That's not marketing; that's culture, and you can't fake the difference.

Practical notes: it's a mountain, so the temperature drops fast once the sun clears the ridge — layers, not optimism. The grass gets crowded by 6, so stake your blanket early. Leashed dogs are a Fanny Hill institution unto themselves. And the beer line is shortest right when the opener starts, which is also, not coincidentally, when the opener most deserves an audience.
