The mid-summer quiet is officially breaking. After weeks of dark marquees and thin tour schedules, Birmingham gets a proper four-night run this week — and true to form, no two nights sound alike. Here's how to spend your Tuesday through Friday.
Tuesday, Aug 11 — Masego at Iron City. The week opens with its biggest swing. Masego brings his "Fix Your Face Tour" to Iron City (513 22nd Street South), the mid-size touring hall that lands exactly this kind of act — too big for a club, too intimate for an arena. Masego trades in the sort of genre-blur that Birmingham audiences eat up, and Iron City's room is built to carry it. If you catch one show this week, this is the marquee.
Wednesday, Aug 12 — Steve Forbert at WorkPlay. Slow it down midweek. Steve Forbert plays WorkPlay (500 23rd St S) at 7:30pm, tickets from $30, in a night made for people who came for the songwriting. Forbert's Americana lands squarely in WorkPlay's wheelhouse — this is the "creative playground" that keeps three music halls, two studios, and the HARMONIC bar humming, and it books rooms like this for a reason. Grab a drink, find a seat, let the songs do the work.
Thursday, Aug 13 — Drew Baldridge at WorkPlay. WorkPlay keeps the momentum with a genre pivot to country. Drew Baldridge takes the stage Thursday, tickets from $20 — a wallet-friendly night for the boot-scooting crowd. Two nights, two very different singers, same reliable room; WorkPlay's earning its keep this week.
Friday, Aug 14 — Bham's Dead at WorkPlay. Close the stretch by getting weird and jammy. Bham's Dead, the local Grateful Dead tribute, brings the extended-jam gospel to WorkPlay Friday night, tickets from just $10. It's the cheapest ticket of the week and possibly the loosest — the kind of show where the setlist is a suggestion and the noodling is the point. Wear something tie-dyed or don't; nobody's checking.
Four nights, four completely different rooms full of people: genre-fluid R&B on Tuesday, Americana on Wednesday, country on Thursday, and a Dead jam to send you into the weekend. And that's before you factor in everything else stirring around town — The Nick and Saturn both have their own August plans, so the calendar only gets busier from here.
