Downtown Burlington has lost some rooms lately, so let's spend a minute with one that isn't going anywhere: the Flynn, the 1,439-seat Art Deco theater whose marquee has been the brightest thing on Main Street since 1930.
Here's the pitch, and it's a good one. The Flynn is the city's flagship performing-arts house — the room that catches the touring acts too big or too seated for a club and too intimate for a lakeside field. It does concerts, dance and comedy across a season, all inside a hall that was built in 1930 and restored in 2000 "to its full Art Deco splendor." That restoration matters more than it sounds. A lot of old theaters get gutted into black boxes; the Flynn kept its bones.
Walk in and you feel it. The venue's own copy describes the Main Stage by "its comfort, ambiance, stunning interior design, and wonderful performances," which reads like marketing until you're actually sitting under the ceiling. Then it reads like an accurate weather report. This is a room designed back when going out to hear something meant dressing for it, and the architecture still gently suggests you might.
Why the spotlight now? Because in a Burlington summer that's tilted almost entirely outdoors — Waterfront Park, the Green at Shelburne, Grand Point North looming in September — it's easy to forget the city has a proper seated concert hall of real pedigree at all. The Flynn is the four-season answer to Vermont's three-season music calendar, the place that keeps working when the lake wind turns cold and the festival fields go quiet.
