A Late-July Weekend That Runs From Nantucket to Hyannis
This is the weekend the summer calendar stops being polite. Between July 28 and 31 you can, if you're willing to book a boat and eat gas-station dinners, catch three genuinely different flavors of live music across two islands' worth of water — and none of it is a tribute act.
Start on Nantucket, where The California Honeydrops play The Chicken Box on July 28 and 29 — a two-night stand in a room that rewards exactly their kind of act. The Honeydrops are a West Coast band that plays New Orleans street R&B and Bay Area soul with the sweaty, no-setlist looseness of people who came up busking; a low-ceilinged Nantucket bar with the AC losing badly is close to their natural habitat. Two nights means they can stretch, and at the Box, they will.
Back on the mainland, the Cape Cod Melody Tent closes the month with a one-two. Everclear headlines July 30 — Art Alexakis and whatever iteration of the band is touring, playing the loud, wounded alt-rock that owned 1997 radio, and doing it in the round. Then on July 31, the tent hosts JJ Grey & Mofro with The Wood Brothers, a genuinely stacked Southern-soul-meets-roots bill.
If you want the honest recommendation: the JJ Grey and Wood Brothers double is the one to build the weekend around. Grey's Florida swamp-soul and the Wood Brothers' back-porch harmony are the kind of pairing that sounds obvious only after you've seen it, and the in-the-round tent is a better room for it than any shed. Everclear is the nostalgia play, and a fun one — but it's a known quantity, and this bill isn't.
Why it matters: a weekend like this is the Cape and Islands proving they're not just a stop but a circuit. A touring band can play Nantucket, the mainland tent and the outer beach across four nights and never leave the region — which is why acts increasingly route through here instead of blowing past to Boston. Every sold-out Box night and full tent is a data point that keeps next summer's calendar this good.
Ferry reservations first, tickets second. In late July, the boat sells out before the show does.
