Friday, July 10 — Wilco at Firefly Distillery (North Charleston), 7 p.m. Jeff Tweedy's road-tested art-rock institution touches down on the Firefly lawn, which is exactly where a Wilco set belongs: open sky, long dusk, and a band that can turn "Impossible Germany" into a twenty-minute weather system. Firefly's field has become the Lowcountry's default for acts too big for the clubs and too smart for the arena, and Wilco is the platonic ideal of that in-between. Get there early; the sweet-tea-vodka lines are not a metaphor.
Saturday, July 11 — Slow Runner and Mechanical River at the Charleston Pour House (James Island), 6 p.m. Here's the one to circle if you want the actual Charleston. Slow Runner — the long-running indie-pop project fronted by Michael Flynn — headlines a genuinely hometown double bill with fellow local Mechanical River. No tour bus, no tribute-band gimmick, just two acts who've been quietly shaping the peninsula's songwriting for years, playing a room that loves them. This is what the Pour House exists for.
Sunday, July 12 — moe. and Umphrey's McGee at The Refinery (Charleston, upper peninsula), 7:30 p.m. The jam-nation double-header finds Charleston's newest big room. If your Sunday scaries respond to two of the improv circuit's most reliable heavyweights trading fretboard runs until your legs give out, The Refinery is your church. Wear shoes you can dance in and don't check the time.
Why it matters: this weekend is the whole Charleston music argument in miniature. Friday is the touring machine on the big lawn. Sunday is the national jam economy testing out the new venue. But Saturday — Saturday is two local lifers on a James Island deck, proving the town makes its own weather. The tourists will find Friday just fine. Saturday is ours.
One weekend, three zip codes, zero excuses. Pace yourself.
