Three Moods, One Friday: How to Spend Aug. 7 in Charlotte Without Cloning Yourself
Some Fridays make you choose. This one makes you choose loudly. On August 7, Charlotte serves up three completely different emotional registers at three different rooms, and no amount of good intentions will let you split the difference. So let's do the responsible thing and sort them by mood, because the only wrong move this weekend is standing in your kitchen at 8 p.m. still deciding.
Mood one: front-porch warmth. The Evening Muse in NoDa hosts Shake the Dust with Carolina Gator Gumbo, a double bill of Americana and folk that's exactly what that intimate, listening-room shoebox does best. The Muse holds barely more than a living room's worth of people, which is the entire point — this is where you go when you want to hear the fingerpicking, not fight the low end. Carolina Gator Gumbo's very name promises a Cajun-tinged stomp, and pairing it with Shake the Dust reads like a night built for two-stepping in a room where the band can see your face. Get there early; small rooms fill from the front.
Mood two: reverence. Over at the Visulite Theatre, the Sam Holt Band presents "Remembering Mikey," the annual tribute Holt stages to Michael "Mikey" Houser, the founding guitarist of Widespread Panic. The connection is genuine, not opportunistic: Holt was a Panic obsessive who became the band's guitar tech for Houser and John Bell in the summer of 2000, then briefly stepped into the touring lineup after Houser's death. Houser died of pancreatic cancer on August 10, 2002, at just 40 — which means this Charlotte show lands three days shy of the 24th anniversary of his passing. That timing turns a tribute set into something closer to a wake with a beat. Holt has spent years keeping Houser's compositions in the air, and his reasoning is simple and beautiful: "When you hear him, you know it's him. There's a million guitar players out there that sound like other people. He sounded like himself." Bring your patience for a long, spacey jam and your respect for a man being remembered by people who actually knew him.
Mood three: unapologetic nostalgia. If you'd rather scream every word to a song from your high-school hard drive, the Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre has your evening. The Fray roll through on their Summer of Light Tour with Dashboard Confessional — and, per the bill, Colony House — a lineup engineered in a lab to make everyone born between 1985 and 1995 feel simultaneously elated and slightly ancient. "How to Save a Life" under an open sky with Chris Carrabba warming up the crowd first? That's not a concert, that's a class reunion with better production values.
And if Friday's abundance leaves you wanting more weekend, Charlotte keeps the taps open. Saturday brings Bryan Adams to the Spectrum Center with Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo on his Roll With the Punches tour — a genuinely stacked bill of the enduringly great. Sunday, Mumford & Sons close things out at Spectrum on their Prizefighter tour with opener Medium Build, banjo-stomp catharsis for the whole family.
But it's Friday that defines the weekend, because Friday is the one that forces a decision about who you are tonight. Do you want to be soothed, moved, or transported back to the ninth grade? Charlotte, generous and slightly cruel, is offering all three at once. Pick a lane, tip your bartender, and don't spend the whole set wondering what's happening at the other two rooms. It's a good problem. Most cities don't have it.
