Ribs, Riffs, and the Riverfront: Your Jul 24–26 Weekend

Some weekends you have to hunt for a plan. This is not one of those weekends. This one is free, it's downtown, and it smells incredible.

The main event is the Jazz & Rib Fest, running Friday through Sunday, July 24–26, along the Scioto Mile riverfront. It costs nothing to walk in, which is the correct price for a festival whose two-word mission statement is already a complete argument: jazz and ribs. Set up along the river, graze your way through the pit smoke, and let the horn sections do the rest. It's the kind of civic ritual that reminds you Columbus does big free things well — the riverfront was practically built for a weekend like this.

If you like your music with a roof and a cover charge, the week around it has been carrying its weight, too. On Monday, July 21, Wild Child brought their lush, harmony-forward folk-pop to A&R Music Bar with Motenko opening — a warm, room-sized show at the 400-cap Neil Ave. club that specializes in exactly that scale. The same night, Rx Bandits turned the Newport Music Hall into the sweatier end of the spectrum, the reliably technical, genre-restless kind of set that the Newport's century-old floor was made to absorb. If you caught either, you spent your Monday better than most.

But back to the river, because the whole point of a festival weekend is that you don't have to overthink it. The beauty of Jazz & Rib Fest is that it rewards both the planner and the wanderer. Show up with a strategy — stake out a stage, map your rib vendors — or show up with nothing but an appetite and follow the crowd. Either approach works when the admission is free and the setting is a downtown riverfront in late July. Bring water, bring napkins, bring a friend who claims they don't like jazz and watch them quietly change their mind somewhere around the second set.

And once you've licked the barbecue sauce off your fingers, keep one eye on the horizon, because the summer's biggest turnstile is about to spin. The Ohio State Fair opens Wednesday, July 29, and it comes out swinging on night one: Styx, with Don Felder, headline the fair's opening concert that same day. That's a lot of classic-rock firepower for a fairgrounds, and it's the unofficial signal that Columbus is shifting from festival season into fair season without missing a beat. The ribs give way to the corn dogs; the jazz gives way to "Come Sail Away." The city barely pauses to catch its breath.

So here's the plan, laid out plainly. Friday through Sunday, point yourself at the Scioto Mile, eat well, and let three days of free music do what free music does — turn strangers into a temporary neighborhood. Then circle Wednesday the 29th on the calendar and start limbering up for the fair. Between the two, Columbus is giving you roughly a week of nonstop reasons to be outside and in earshot of a stage.

The forecast is smoke, saxophones, and no excuse to stay home. Go get your napkins.
