Guitars, Grooves, and a Giant in Arlington: Your Aug 14–16 Plan

Let's get the elephant out of the way first, because it's the size of a stadium. This weekend, BTS play two nights at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, August 15 and 16 — comfortably the summer's biggest DFW draw and, realistically, the gravitational center of the entire region's weekend. Tens of thousands of people are pointing themselves at Arlington. Traffic will be a rumor and a nightmare. Plan accordingly.

But here's the thing about a giant taking up all the oxygen: it leaves the good local rooms wide open for the rest of us. And this weekend, the smaller marquees are stacked with exactly the kind of shows that reward staying close to home.

Start at the Granada Theater on Greenville, which is running a genuine two-night double feature. Thursday — okay, Thursday, we're calling it early-weekend — Monte Montgomery plays August 14 at 8pm, and if you've never watched Montgomery treat an acoustic guitar like it owes him money, the Granada's roughly 1,000-cap room under that landmark marquee is the place to fix that. Then Friday, August 15 at 8pm, the Granada pivots hard into party mode with Tropidelic, the kind of horn-forward, genre-blurring live band built to make a theater floor bounce. Two nights, two completely different energies, one of the best-sounding rooms in the city.

Cross the river to Oak Cliff for the weekend's listening-room pick. The Kessler Theater hosts Cain on August 14 at 8pm, and the Kessler is precisely the venue you want for a show you actually intend to hear — that restored 1942 house is famous for pristine sound, the kind of room where the quiet parts land as hard as the loud ones. If Granada is the party, the Kessler is the pull-up-a-chair-and-pay-attention counterpoint.

And to close the weekend back home where it belongs, Three Links in Deep Ellum welcomes Lqm on Sunday, August 16 at 6pm. An early start, an intimate roughly-250-cap room with, as the club likes to say, a punk rock heart — the perfect low-key landing after a loud few days. Sunday, 6pm, Deep Ellum. That's a civilized way to end a weekend.

So here's the strategy. If you've got BTS tickets, you already know your Saturday and Sunday, and we salute you — just build in an extra hour for the Arlington crush. If you don't, this is arguably the best weekend of the summer to not be at the biggest show in town. While the region funnels itself toward AT&T Stadium, the Granada, the Kessler, and Three Links are running exactly the sort of nights that made us fall for Dallas rooms in the first place: a guitar wizard, a party band, a listening-room set, and an early Deep Ellum sendoff, all inside a short drive of each other.

Big stadiums make the headlines. The rooms make the memories. Pick your marquee and go.
