The Summer Bluestem Went Dark: What Jade Presents' Collapse Means for Fargo-Moorhead
If this summer feels a little thinner at the top, there's a reason with a name. On May 28, Jade Presents — the Fargo promoter that spent more than 30 years booking the region's biggest shows — announced it was shutting down. The company called the decision "deeply heartbreaking" and pointed to rising costs, shifting touring economics, post-COVID pressures and the squeeze on independent promoters. Ten days later, on June 8, it filed for bankruptcy, listing nearly $2.9 million in debt.
The most visible casualty was Bluestem Amphitheater in Moorhead, the outdoor room along the Red River that Jade programmed each summer. The entire 2026 season evaporated: Alison Krauss & Union Station (June 16), David Lee Roth (June 17), the comedy of John Mulaney (Aug 23), Needtobreathe (Aug 25) and The Rock Orchestra by Candlelight (Sept 5) all fell off the calendar, along with the season-opening Parrothead Paradise "Sip & Sail" and the traveling Happy Together tour. Shows at the UP District festival field were cancelled too, and questions about booked dates at the Fargo Theatre and The Aquarium sent bookers scrambling.
For a scene this size, losing a promoter of that vintage is less like losing a business and more like losing a piece of civic infrastructure. Jade was the entity that could land an Alison Krauss on a Moorhead field — the kind of act that doesn't route through markets this size without someone local willing to take the risk.
And yet. Walk into The Aquarium this month and you'd never know the sky had fallen. The room's July calendar filled in fast, stitched together by a patchwork of independent promoters — the Snow & Flurrys and Metro Concerts and 1111 Entertainments of the world — booking night after night above Dempsey's. The grassroots layer of this scene, it turns out, was never dependent on any single company. It was just quieter about it.
The open wounds are real. Refunds for cancelled Bluestem shows remained unresolved at the announcement, tangled in the bankruptcy, and ticketholders were told that claims, credits and reimbursements couldn't yet be spelled out. If you're holding tickets to a cancelled show, hang onto your confirmation emails and watch the court proceedings, not social media.
The bigger question is what fills the vacuum at the top. Bluestem is a genuinely special room — a natural amphitheater on the river — and an idle summer there is a loss the whole metro feels. Someone will eventually want to program it. The West Fargo fairgrounds and the FARGODOME can absorb the arena-scale acts; the clubs were always going to be fine. It's the middle — the 2,000-cap outdoor show on a July night — that Fargo-Moorhead has to figure out how to rebuild.
Scenes are resilient in the small and fragile in the large. This summer is the proof of both at once.
