Loud, Weird, Ours: Bitchflower and the Case for FoCo's DIY Underbelly

For all its brewery lawns and blanket-and-picnic concert series, Fort Collins keeps a louder, stranger heart beating in its smaller rooms — and few bands embody it like Bitchflower. The psych-punk five-piece — Brooke Van Buiten, Zack Michael Hill, Steven Davis, Nick Perich and Miles Mercer — deals in a sound that lurches, per one local description, "from low, growly vocals to high-energy, fast-paced screams." It is not background music. It is not for the lawn. It is exactly the kind of band a healthy scene needs and a lazy one never produces.

Their 2025 record Aghast, Aroused, Appalled is a title that functions as a mission statement: three reactions a Bitchflower set is engineered to provoke, ideally all within the same song. Psych-punk is a genre that lives or dies on nerve, and this is a band with nerve to spare — the kind of act that makes a Tuesday at a small downtown room feel like something you got away with.

Here's the context that makes them matter. Fort Collins's national reputation runs through the mellow end of the spectrum — jam bands up the canyon, folk on the brewery grass, singer-songwriters in the hotel lounge. All lovely. All true. But a scene that only does mellow is a scene slowly going to sleep, and the antidote is a band willing to be aggressively itself in a 250-capacity room where the front row can see you sweat.

That's the ecosystem worth defending. The rooms that host bands like Bitchflower — the reopened Sound Bar on Linden, the Aggie's grimier nights, the DIY spaces that come and go — are the R&D department of the whole scene. They're where a band learns to command a room before it ever sniffs a Washington's stage or a Mishawaka slot. Kill the small rooms and you don't just lose the weird bands; you lose the pipeline that turns weird bands into the touring acts that fill the big ones.

Fort Collins knows this, at least in theory. It's the same city that pours its energy into FoCoMX every April — the sprawling two-day festival that packs hundreds of local acts into downtown rooms and treats a psych-punk quintet and a folk trio as equally load-bearing. Bitchflower earned a spot in that conversation this year, which is the scene's way of saying: yes, you too, get louder.

Why write about a band you may not have heard on the radio? Because the radio isn't where scenes are built. They're built in the rooms where a band like Bitchflower can be too much — too loud, too raw, too weird for the algorithm — and find a hundred people who wanted exactly that. The brewery lawns will always be there, sunlit and safe. The underbelly needs you to actually show up.

So consider this your nudge. Put Aghast, Aroused, Appalled on loud, in a small space, with the neighbors home. Then go find the next bill with a name you don't recognize opening for a band you barely do. That's where Fort Collins keeps its pulse — not on the lawn, but in the room where somebody's screaming, and everybody's glad they came.
