Metal, Tributes, and a Beer Garden: The Upstate's Loudest Weekend
Circle Aug. 13–15. Across two cities and at least four rooms, the Upstate is about to run one of its busiest music weekends of the summer, and it swings from riff-metal to Duran Duran to a farmer's-market-hours Americana set without blinking. Here's how to spend it.
Thursday, Aug. 13 — The Radio Room, Greenville. The weekend opens heavy. Local outfit PTerry headlines a stacked bill with Practically Paradise, Glass Mansions and Private Violet — a proper hometown showcase in the 500-capacity Liberty Lane room. Doors are cheap, the lineup is deep, and it's the kind of all-local card that proves the new Radio Room didn't forget who built the old one.
Friday, Aug. 14 — two cities, take your pick. In Spartanburg, Ground Zero hosts Forever This Way on Howard Street — the reliably loud, 18-and-up rock room doing what it's done for decades. Prefer free and outdoors? Main Street Fridays puts Beth Inabinett & For the FunK of It on the NOMA Square stage in Greenville from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., a horn-forward funk set built to turn a downtown sidewalk into a dance floor. One ticket, zero tickets — the Upstate lets you choose your own adventure.
Saturday, Aug. 15 — the big one, three ways. This is where the weekend earns its name. At the Radio Room, Sugar! A Tribute to System of a Down headlines a heavy Carolina card that includes REdEFIND — the Greenville metal band whose own Images EP was a local landmark back in 2021 — alongside Saving Darkness and CutThroat Suzy. Down in Spartanburg, Ground Zero counters with Angel Massacre, keeping the metal loud on both ends of the corridor. And if your ears need daylight and open air, FR8yard hosts Upstate roots guitarist Brian Ashley Jones in the beer garden — the mellow, string-forward antidote to a weekend built on distortion.
Why does a weekend like this matter? Because it's the whole thesis of this scene in three days. A twin-city, textile-country region between Atlanta and Charlotte isn't supposed to be able to offer you a SOAD tribute, a decades-old rock institution, a free funk band and a roots guitarist across a single Friday-and-Saturday — and it just did, without a marquee national headliner in sight. This is depth, not luck. It's what a region looks like when it's spent years building its own rooms instead of waiting for the tour bus.
A couple of housekeeping notes before you commit: the SOAD tribute is billed at 8 p.m. and the local bills tend to run late, so pace yourself. And if you're trying to do both cities in one night, remember the Greenville–Spartanburg run is a quick shot up I-85 — loud in Greenville by 8, louder in Spartanburg by 10 is genuinely doable.
Four rooms, two cities, everything from riff-metal to funk to fingerpicking. Pick a lane or drive all of them. The Upstate stacked the deck — your only job is to show up loud.
