This Weekend: Champagne on the Lawn, Bomba at the Waterfront, and Symphony Under the Stars

Three ways to spend a July weekend in the 757, and not one of them requires leaving the water for long.

Saturday, the big one: Ne-Yo and Akon, Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater. The Nights Like This Tour rolls onto the Virginia Beach lawn with two of the most reliable hitmakers of the 2000s sharing a bill — Ne-Yo, the songwriter's songwriter who quietly built half your favorite R&B radio decade, and Akon, whose hooks were legally impossible to escape in 2007. This is a 20,000-cap shed built for exactly this: a warm night, a full lawn, and a catalog where every third song is one you forgot you knew every word to. Bring the crew; this is not a sit-down show.

Also Saturday, and free: the Norfolk Latino Music & Food Festival, Town Point Park. While Virginia Beach does arena R&B, downtown Norfolk throws open its riverfront for a full day of Latin music, food, and dance on the Elizabeth River, courtesy of Norfolk Festevents. The 757's Latino community is large, deep-rooted, and too often left off the region's cultural marquee — this is the day it takes center stage, with the harbor as a backdrop and admission at the unbeatable price of zero. Come hungry.

Sunday, to cool it down: Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Concert in the Park. Same Town Point Park, entirely different register. The VSO — one of the region's genuine crown jewels, and a full-size professional orchestra most cities its size would kill for — brings its Concert in the Park to the waterfront on Sunday. Spread a blanket, let the brass carry over the water, and remember that the 757 does high culture and free culture at the same address on back-to-back nights.

That's the argument for this region in one weekend. A metro that's supposedly overshadowed by Richmond and D.C. is running, in a single 48-hour stretch, a 20,000-seat R&B nostalgia blowout, a free Latin-music festival on the harbor, and a symphony picnic — across three cities you can connect by bridge, tunnel, or a very pleasant ferry.

Pace yourself. Saturday is for volume, Sunday is for grace, and the parking at Town Point fills early both days. Sunscreen Saturday, bug spray Sunday, and a designated driver whichever night you pick. The 757 doesn't do slow summers — it just doesn't always tell you about them.
