A Field Guide to Honolulu's Live-Music Rooms
Every island has a sound, but a sound needs somewhere to live. On Oʻahu that "somewhere" is scattered from a Waikīkī supper club to a Chinatown walk-up, and if you only know the arena tours you're missing about ninety percent of the good stuff. So here's your cheat sheet — the rooms where Honolulu actually hears music, what each one is built for, and why they're worth your night. Clip it, screenshot it, argue with it.
Blue Note Hawaii — 2335 Kalākaua Ave, inside the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort. The national Blue Note brand's Hawaiʻi outpost, and it plays exactly the part you'd expect: an intimate, seated supper club running nightly shows on the classic dinner-plus-two-sets format. This is a room built for legacy residencies, and the calendar proves it — Air Supply parks here for a multi-night stand (Aug 11, 12, 14, 15 and 16) that is peak Blue Note. Come for the sightlines, stay because you already ordered the entrée. If you want to be six feet from a name act with a glass of something, this is the room.
The Republik — 1349 Kapiōlani Blvd. The workhorse. Self-billed as "Honolulu's premiere concert and events venue," it's the island's main mid-size touring stop, and in any given month it churns through indie, electronic, reggae and hometown bills, with the age policy shifting show to show. It was the single busiest room in town this summer: Silversun Pickups, LA LOM and Toro y Moi all cycled through within a few weeks of each other. If a buzzy mainland band is playing Honolulu and it isn't an arena, bet on The Republik.
HB Social Club (Hawaiian Brian's) — Ala Moana / Kapiʻolani area. The old Hawaiian Brian's, reborn as HB Social Club — a club-and-billiards complex that leans into DJ and bass nights alongside local bands. It's the room where you can rack a game and catch a set in the same sweaty, happy hour, and its bookings tell you where the low end lives: bass act Champagne Drip (with Georgie Riot) drops in Jul 25. Louder, later, less precious than Waikīkī — by design.
Anna O'Brien's / Tavana's at Anna's — 2440 S Beretania St, Mōʻiliʻili. The scrappy, beloved heart of the list. Open since 1969 (as "Anna Bannanas," renamed in 2010), this longtime Irish pub and live-music dive changed hands in 2026, with local musician Tavana taking the reins. It didn't close — it soft-opened July 10, now split between the downstairs pub and an upstairs showroom rebranded "Tavana's at Anna's." Watch this one: the new plan reportedly includes monthly open-mics and a live slate pitched as a way to knit the local scene back together.
The Dragon Upstairs — 1038 Nuʻuanu Ave, Chinatown. Climb the stairs above Hank's Cafe and you're in Honolulu's best-kept jazz secret: a small second-floor lounge that has quietly been the home base for local combos for years, and a reliable First Friday stop. There's no bad seat because there's barely any room — which is the point. This is where you go when you want the music close enough to feel the brushes on the snare.
Tom Moffatt Waikiki Shell — at the edge of Kapiʻolani Park, part of the Neal S. Blaisdell Center. The big outdoor shed: grass lawn plus reserved seating, trade winds included, and the go-to for larger open-air concerts. Fair warning for this specific window — no ticketed Shell concert actually landed between July 6 and Aug 16 (the nearest dated bookings sit outside it ). File it under "check the calendar, then pack a blanket."
Six rooms, six different nights out. The supper club and the amphitheater get the postcards, but the dive and the walk-up jazz lounge are where the scene actually breathes — and where Tavana's reboot might just be the most interesting story on the island right now. Pick a room. Go hear something.
