From Emo Nights to Classic Numbers: August 14–16 in Houston
Mid-August in Houston is a test of will, and this weekend's lineup rewards anyone who shows up. We've got tour stops, single-release parties, rockabilly doubleheaders, and the eternal goth ritual that is Classic Numbers. Here's the map, room by room.
White Oak Music Hall opens the weekend big. Friday, Aug 14, brings Clarent on its USA Tour alongside Sorry, Sarah, with Forever Miles and Bipolar Joyride filling out a bill built for people who like their choruses cathartic and their crowds loud. Then Saturday, Aug 15, the room hands the night to Zenjii for a single-release party — the kind of hometown milestone gig where the energy runs hotter because everyone in the room actually knows the artist.
Over at Warehouse Live Midtown — remember, the brand's new home in the old Rise Rooftop at 2600 Travis — it's a three-night run. Miss the Rage takes Friday, Aug 14; Blade Rave brings the electronic mayhem Saturday, Aug 15; and Royal Coda closes it Sunday, Aug 16, with technical, genre-bending heaviness for the discerning headbanger.
Craving something with a little grease and twang? The Continental Club runs a proper roots doubleheader. Friday, Aug 14, Jomo & The Possum Posse share the bill with Gabe Wootton. Saturday, Aug 15, the red lights get louder still with The Flamin' Hellcats and The Killer Hearts — rockabilly and garage-rock built to rattle the Midtown windows.
And then there's the constant, the thing that outlasts everything: Numbers Nightclub running Classic Numbers with DJ Wes Wallace on both Aug 14 and Aug 15. In its 47th year, the Montrose landmark keeps the goth and new-wave faithful dancing exactly as it has for decades. Whatever else changes in this city, Friday and Saturday at Numbers do not.
Close the weekend on a softer note. Sunday, Aug 16, The Heights Theater hosts Willow Avalon with JD Clayton and Slater Nalley — a night of alt-country and modern Americana under the theater's chandeliers, the sort of restored-movie-house setting that makes a singer-songwriter set feel like an event. It's the graceful landing this weekend deserves.
So there it is: emo catharsis, electronic chaos, rockabilly swagger, decades-deep goth, and a chandelier-lit country finale, all within a few Houston freeway exits of one another.
