Grossman's Barn Still Books the Best Summer in Woodstock
If Levon Helm Studios is the valley's sacred room, Bearsville Theater is its cathedral of good taste — and this summer it's carrying Woodstock's calendar on its back.
The building has bona fides most venues would kill for. It sits at 291 Tinker Street inside the 15-acre Bearsville Center that Albert Grossman — the manager who steered The Band and Bob Dylan — assembled outside town. The theater opened in 1989, framed out of an 18th-century barn and designed by John Storyk, the acoustician behind Electric Lady Studios. Translation: the guy who tuned Hendrix's playground shaped how this room sounds. It's an immersive concert hall with a full-bar lounge attached, and the acoustics are not an accident.
The 2026 season the theater announced back in April is doing exactly what a flagship room should — anchoring the whole town's summer. Patty Griffin already played July 10. Still ahead: The Blues Project this Friday, July 24; punk-scholar songwriter Ted Leo and the Pharmacists with Cult Objects on July 30; a Garcia Project Jerry Garcia birthday celebration on August 1; New Orleans-schooled soul-rocker Neal Francis with Pearl Charles on August 8; and Mississippi hill-country torchbearers North Mississippi Allstars on August 14.
That's the range that makes Bearsville matter: blues revivalists, a punk lifer, a Dead tribute, a rising soul act and a roots-rock institution, all inside one barn-built hall in a single stretch of summer. No single genre owns the room, which is the surest sign a booker actually loves music rather than a demographic.
Why it matters: Woodstock's mythology tends to point backward, toward 1969 and a festival that didn't even happen in Woodstock. Bearsville is the counterargument — a room with real history that keeps pointing the town's music culture forward, one eclectic bill at a time. Grossman built it to be a serious place. Nearly forty years on, it still is.
Get there early enough to appreciate the barn it used to be. Then let Storyk's acoustics do the rest.
