GrassRoots at 34: Four Days, Four Stages, and the Reason We All Stay

Every year around this time, Ithaca collectively remembers why it puts up with February. The Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance returns to the Trumansburg Fairgrounds (2150 Trumansburg Rd.) this Thursday through Sunday, July 16–19 — its 34th annual go-round, and still the gravitational center of the entire Finger Lakes summer. Four days, four stages, 80-plus artists, and a founding host band, Donna the Buffalo, who have been throwing this party since before half the campground was born.

The headline names alone justify the drive out Route 96. Rhiannon Giddens. Taj Mahal. Del McCoury Band. That's a roots-music summit most cities would build an entire festival around; GrassRoots slots all three into one long weekend and treats it as normal. (We'll go deeper on that trio in a companion piece — they earn it.)

But the thing longtime GrassRooters know is that the headliners are only the doorway. The real festival lives in the sprawl of the undercard, and this year's is stacked: Ukraine's ethno-chaos quartet DakhaBrakha, Ithaca's own reggae road warriors John Brown's Body, Yemeni-Israeli psych outfit El Khat, Venezuelan cuatro virtuosos C4 Trio, Senegalese percussion from the Aba Diop Trio, Irish-family stompers The Byrne Brothers, and a proper Louisiana zydeco contingent in Keith Frank & the Soileau Zydeco Band and Preston Frank. Add local heroes Maddy Walsh & the Blind Spots and the Fall Creek Brass Band, and you've got a lineup that ricochets across four continents before dinner.

A few practical notes, festival-veteran division: GrassRoots is a rain-or-shine, dance-until-you-can't affair, and the stages run deep into the night. Do not show up expecting to wing it on lodging in mid-July; this is the one weekend Trumansburg has no vacancy.

If the fairgrounds aren't your speed — or your wallet's — the weekend still has you. On Friday, July 17, the Nocturnal Café hosts Rock 4 Revolution, free and all-ages, keeping the downtown underground lit while the county decamps to T-burg. And come Sunday, July 19, ease your festival hangover with the Collins-McCalip Duo at Ithaca Beer Co. a gentle re-entry to ordinary life.

Here's why GrassRoots matters more than ever in 2026: as our club tier has thinned to a handful of survivors, the festival has become something closer to a keystone than a highlight. It's four days that remind a battered scene what critical mass feels like — thousands of people choosing, all at once, to be somewhere loud and communal and alive. Thirty-four years in, that's not nostalgia. That's infrastructure.
