Suneaters Bring "Heroic Dose" Home to the Replay Patio

There is a specific kind of Lawrence show that never makes the regional listicles: a record-release gig at the Replay Lounge, six o'clock, early enough that you can still get dinner after. Tonight is one of those, and it happens to involve one of the more quietly interesting rock records to come out of Kansas this year.

Suneaters — the long-running project that describes its own aesthetic as "smartass sincerity" — celebrate Suneaters V: Heroic Dose at the Replay tonight, the album having landed June 19 on Lotuspool Records as a digital release and double LP. The band files its sound under "askew, unwinding, psychedelic bluesy art rock," and the reference points they cite tell you everything about the ambition: SST Records, Led Zeppelin, INXS, Kool Keith, and Graham Nash, all in one breath.

The Lawrence connection runs straight through the bar you're standing in. Suneaters' lineup includes Nick Carroll — the man who opened the Replay Lounge in 1993 and has spent three decades as one of the city's essential punk-rock fixtures. A record-release show here isn't a booking; it's a homecoming to a room he built.

He's not carrying the night alone. The bill pairs Suneaters with Heidi Gluck, a Lawrence songwriter with a résumé most towns would kill for — a Lotuspool labelmate whose crystalline pop-craft has orbited the national indie world for years — plus power-pop openers The Harrisonics. It's a three-band early show for the cost of a couple of drinks, which is the Replay's entire operating philosophy distilled into one Friday.

What makes the release worth marking isn't novelty — Suneaters have been at this since the late 2000s and have a stack of albums to show for it — but persistence. Heroic Dose is the fifth entry in a numbered run, made by people who came up in the same ecosystem that produced the Outhouse and Lotuspool and never left. The label itself, founded in the early '90s, is one of the connective threads that makes "the Lawrence scene" an actual continuous thing rather than a nostalgia exercise.

That continuity is the story. A lot of scenes are a single graduating class that scatters after four years. Lawrence keeps a spine of people who stay, book the rooms, run the labels, and hand the next cohort a working infrastructure instead of a legend. Carroll opening the Replay in '93 and standing on its floor with a new double LP in 2026 is the clearest possible proof of that.

Doors are early, the covers are cheap, and the patio — pinball humming, string lights on — is the correct venue for a psychedelic art-rock record that took its time. Grab the LP off the merch table while it's warm. Records like this don't get pressed by accident, and they don't get made in towns that let their scenes die.

If you miss it tonight, Heroic Dose is streaming everywhere and the vinyl is on Lotuspool. But you'll have missed the room where it belongs.
