Homegrown Weekend: Las Rosas Turns a Corner and III Points Comes Recruiting
This is the kind of weekend that makes the case for staying local. No stadium, no $300 resale ticket, no headliner flown in from three time zones away — just Miami's own rooms doing what they do best, and a festival coming to the neighborhood bar to go fishing for talent. Here's your plan.
Thursday, August 6, eases you in at Sable (2219 NW 2nd Ave), where the new Long Play Thursdays series debuts with future-jazz duo Twyn and a vinyl set from Angelica Rose — a free, low-key Wynwood opener for the nights ahead.
Friday, August 7, is when it gets loud. Las Rosas (2898 NW 7th Ave) hosts Roi Turbo, the dance-rock brothers, at a free show billed as an anniversary celebration for the room. Either way, there are few better places in Miami to spend a Friday than that red-lit dive, and few local bands better suited to it than a pair of siblings who make guitars sound like a dance floor.
Prefer your Friday in Little River? ZeyZey (353 NE 61st St) has Bad Tuner, the Brooklyn producer and DJ who blends house rhythms with lush synth textures — free with RSVP before 11 p.m., the venue's usual generous deal.
Saturday, August 8, splits between the sacred and the celebratory. At the Little Haiti Cultural Complex (212 NE 59th Terrace), the Assel Jean-Pierre Trio plays "Jazz in the Sanctuary," a pair of afternoon sets (2:30 and 3:45 p.m.) of Haitian-influenced jazz performed inside an art exhibit — one of those only-in-Miami combinations that makes the rest of the country's programming look timid. Meanwhile, over in Wynwood, Dukunoo Jamaican Kitchen (316 NW 24th St) throws a Jamaica Independence Day Party with DJ Slim spinning reggae, dancehall, and Caribbean music, dance competition included.
And then, looking just past the weekend, the reason to keep your calendar open: on Wednesday and Thursday, August 12–13, III Points — the city's flagship music-and-art festival — holds an Open House at Las Rosas, a local-talent competition where Miami acts vie for a slot at the festival itself (RSVP required). This is the pipeline made visible: the neighborhood dive as the on-ramp to the main stage, homegrown bands auditioning for the biggest local platform there is. If you want to watch the future of the scene get decided in real time, that's the room.
Add it up and you get a weekend with a thesis: the best of Miami is made in Miami.
