American Football, Buffalo Nichols, and a Center Street Street Party: Mid-August Goes Off
Milwaukee saves some of its best small-room music for the exact weekend everyone's supposedly at the State Fair. Consider this your permission slip to skip the cream puff line. Between tonight and Saturday, Turner Hall, the Cactus Club, and a full-blown Riverwest street festival are hosting a run of shows worth rearranging your weekend around.
Start tonight, Thursday the 13th. Alley Eyes throw a record-release show at The Cooperage with Hot Mess, Callback, and Fakeout — another entry in this summer's endless, glorious parade of homegrown releases. Blues-soul guitarist Phillip-Michael Scales plays the Cactus Club the same night, and Milwaukee's own Long Mama brings their aching country-folk to Third Space Brewing. Three very different Thursdays, all within a short drive.
Friday the 14th is when the marquee names arrive in the good rooms. Buffalo Nichols — the Milwaukee-raised bluesman whose stark, modern take on the form put him on Fat Possum — headlines the Cactus Club, a genuine hometown-hero booking in a room that helped raise him. Up at Turner Hall Ballroom, jam favorites Dogs in a Pile bring the improv with Modern Joey. And if you moved fast, you're at the sold-out Eric Bachmann show at Irving Place Records, the Crooked Fingers and Archers of Loaf frontman playing an intimate in-store.
But Saturday the 15th is the main event, and it's a doubleheader of moods. In the afternoon and evening, Center Street Daze takes over Riverwest — a free neighborhood street festival with a lineup that reads like a Milwaukee family reunion: Jayke Orvis, Coo Coo Cal, the sprawling art-rock collective Group of the Altos, Whiskey & the Devil, Los Mitoteros, and more, across the street you actually live near. Then that night, American Football — yes, the American Football, the emo touchstone whose self-titled record launched a thousand math-rock bands — headlines Turner Hall Ballroom with Afternoon Bike Ride. Twinkly guitars, a landmark 1882 ballroom, and a room full of people who know every unusual time signature by heart. Elsewhere Saturday, Pinkshift rip up The Argo and Tori Amos plays the Riverside for the ticket-splurge crowd.
The throughline, as ever, is that the small rooms are where the weekend actually lives. The State Fair has For King + Country and the Isley Brothers; Irish Fest has the whole lakefront through Sunday; both are grand Milwaukee institutions and neither will remember your name. Center Street Daze will. So will the Cactus Club when Buffalo Nichols — a guy from here — plays a hometown set to a room that's been rooting for him since before the world was.
That's the mid-August pitch in one sentence: a hometown bluesman, a landmark emo band, and a free street party full of Milwaukee lifers, all inside 72 hours and mostly inside a neighborhood. Bring cash for the merch tables and comfortable shoes for Center Street. The fried food will still be there Sunday. Group of the Altos won't.
