Grown-Up Feelings Friday, Teenage Feelings Saturday: A Two-Night River Bender
Some weekends make you choose. This one makes you commit to a bit. KettleHouse Amphitheater is closing out July and opening August with back-to-back nights that could not be more tonally opposite, and the correct response is to buy both and let your inner monologue do the rest.
Friday, July 31 — Andy Grammer. The earnest one. Grammer trades in the kind of arms-up, believe-in-yourself pop that plays like a summer sunset was written into the contract — and out at Bonner, a summer sunset actually is. A 4,250-cap amphitheater on the Blackfoot, a crowd that knows every word, and a guy whose entire catalog is designed to make you feel briefly, sincerely okay about everything. It's a warm bath with a river view.
Saturday, August 1 — Simple Plan, Bowling For Soup & 3OH!3. And then, chaos. The pop-punk/party triple bill rolls in the very next night, and if you came of age anywhere near a 2000s mall food court, this is your Woodstock. Simple Plan still means it, Bowling For Soup has never once taken itself seriously, and 3OH!3 exists to make you scream a chorus you're mildly embarrassed to know. Three bands, one nostalgia bomb, detonated on a riverbank. Wear the studded belt. Nobody's judging; everybody's the same age tonight.
The through-line is that KettleHouse spent this summer proving it can be anything on any given night — a bass rave, a folk cry, a stadium-pop sunset, a pop-punk time machine — without ever changing the one thing that makes it work: the water behind the stage and the ridge behind the water.
Logistics remain the same gospel we preach every week. It's a short drive out toward Bonner from downtown, the two-lane road clots before big shows, and the canyon runs ten degrees colder than town by encore time. Bring the layer even to the pop-punk show, especially to the pop-punk show — heartbreak and hypothermia are a bad combination.
Here's the pitch: do the double. Let Andy Grammer talk you into optimism on Friday, then let Simple Plan remind you that being fifteen and furious was also, somehow, great. Same riverbank, two decades of your own life, one weekend. Missoula summers don't ask you to pick a self. They just ask you to show up by the water and be all of them.
