This Weekend: Free Beach Music on Main, and Bourbon on the Deck
Peak-season Saturday nights on the Strand come at peak-season prices, so let's begin where the smart locals begin: free.
Tonight — Music on Main, The Horseshoe (North Myrtle Beach), 6:30–8:30 p.m. The city's Thursday concert series parks a band on the open-air Main Street stage with the ocean at its back, and the whole thing costs exactly nothing. This week's booking is Cassette Rewind, leaning to the series' rotating diet of beach music, Motown, and throwback covers. Bring a low chair, leave the cooler in the car, and expect gray-haired couples to out-dance you without breaking a sweat — North Myrtle Beach bills itself as the spiritual home of the Carolina shag, and Thursdays on Main are where it shows off. The series runs every Thursday into late September.
Fri–Sun — Twelve 33 Distillery Deck Takeover, House of Blues (Barefoot Landing). The Strand's flagship room hands its outdoor Deck over to a distillery pop-up, folding cocktails and live music into the House of Blues' waterfront-adjacent patio scene. It's a lower-key way into the biggest venue on the beach — no arena-priced ticket required, just show up thirsty.
All weekend — Murrells Inlet MarshWalk. Twenty minutes south, the tidal-creek boardwalk is the Strand's most reliable free live-music crawl. Dead Dog Saloon — three bars, a marsh view, a mascot named Dudley — puts bands on after dinner, and you can hop the boardwalk to a half-dozen other decks in one night. The locals' motto for the whole inlet: "a quiet little drinking village with a fishing problem." Believe them.
And the honky-tonk option: The Bowery on Ocean Boulevard doesn't do advance calendars or cover charges you'll remember — it just opens the doors and lets the Bounty Hunters play country-rock the way they've done for twenty-plus years, in the room where Alabama got its start. Some weekends the best plan is the oldest one.
The forecast is hot, the parking is worse, and the music is everywhere and mostly free. Wear something you can dance in.
