Will's Pub, the Bastion of the Weird, Books Another Perfect Wednesday

Every city thinks it has a Will's Pub. It doesn't. There is exactly one red-walled, low-slung, gloriously stubborn room at 1042 N. Mills Ave., and this Wednesday, July 29, it will do the thing it has done better than anywhere in Central Florida for going on thirty years: hand a young, loud, hometown-adjacent bill a real stage. The lineup — 0 Miles Per Hour, bugsy, Kerosene Heights and Riley! — is precisely the kind of emo-punk clutch of bands that Will's exists to elevate.

To understand why that matters, you have to understand the room. Will Walker opened Will's Pub in the mid-1990s near Loch Haven, watched the original close in 2006, and reopened at its current Mills 50 home in November 2008. In 2012 he added Lil Indies next door — the velvet-and-lamplight lounge with no cover — and in 2014 finally got a full liquor license, which regulars will tell you changed the cocktails and absolutely nothing about the soul. Across all of it, the booking ethos has stayed gloriously contrarian: punk and country and noise and drone, benefit shows when a scene member hits hard times, memorials when Orlando loses one of its own. Orlando Weekly has called it a "bastion of the weird," and the phrase has stuck because it's simply accurate.

The genius of Will's is that it treats a Wednesday like it matters. A Tuesday-through-Thursday booking at most venues is an afterthought, a placeholder between the money nights. Here, a random midweek bill of touring DIY acts and locals gets the same red-lit stage, the same attentive sound, the same shot at the crowd that came out because they trust the room more than they know the bands. That trust is a currency almost nobody else in this market has earned.

It's a busy stretch, too. The calendar around this show is a scroll of exactly the kind of programming that defines the place — Body Thief earlier in the week, Born Without Bones on July 25, an August that runs from a Duran Duran-flavored "Girls on Film" night to punk benefits to album releases. No single genre. No cover-band safety net. Just a room that assumes its audience is curious and adventurous, and is almost always right.

There's a reason bands who make it out of here talk about Will's the way people talk about a first apartment — cramped, cheap, formative, impossible to replace. Will Walker built a place where the weird is the whole point, and then he kept it open through closures, relocations and the general Florida tendency to pave over anything with character.

So go on Wednesday. Buy the touring band's merch, tip the bartender, and stay for the last set even though you have work in the morning. That's how a bastion stays standing — one perfect, unnecessary weeknight at a time.
