Your Pittsburgh Weekend: Aug 14–16
Some weekends make you choose. This one makes you triage. Between Millvale, the North Shore, and the South Side, the next three nights stack synth-pop, a genuine rock legend, roots-band sweat, and a devoted-fanbase church revival on top of each other. Here is how to spend it without pulling a hamstring running between venues.
Friday, Aug 14
The marquee headache is a good one. At Mr. Smalls Theatre in Millvale, Brooklyn synth-pop outfit St. Lucia turns the old church into a glowing, propulsive dance floor — the kind of maximalist, heart-on-sleeve pop that sounds engineered specifically for a summer Friday. Show's at 8, and the room was down to single-digit ticket counts at last check, so do not dawdle.
Across town at Stage AE on the North Shore, a bona fide legend takes the stage: Todd Rundgren, the restless multi-instrumentalist, hitmaker ("Hello It's Me," "I Saw the Light"), Utopia ringleader, and studio wizard behind era-defining records for everyone from Meat Loaf to XTC. Fifty-plus years in, Rundgren remains one of rock's great contrarians, and catching him in a room Stage AE's size is close to a gift.
Prefer stomp and holler? Club Café on the South Side hosts Cincinnati roots-and-Americana crew Buffalo Wabs & The Price Hill Hustle, whose brand of ramshackle, foot-on-the-monitor string-band energy is tailor-made for a sweaty little room like this one.
Saturday, Aug 15
Mr. Smalls goes rowdy with the White Trash Bash, an 8 p.m. throwdown that leans into the name — expect a party, not a seated recital.
For something homegrown, Club Café books Woodland Creatures with The Wreckids, a bill of regional acts worth betting on if you like discovering your next favorite local band before your friends do.
Sunday, Aug 16
Save something in the tank, because Sunday is stacked. Mr. Smalls welcomes The Mountain Goats — John Darnielle's beloved, absurdly prolific project, whose fans do not so much attend shows as testify at them (more on that in our full preview). It's an 8 p.m. show and, again, tickets were thinning fast.
If you'd rather close the weekend loud and local, Club Café offers Raspberry Pie with Foamer and Moontown — a triple bill to send you into Monday with your ears still ringing.
The verdict: Friday is the true logjam — St. Lucia, Rundgren, and Buffalo Wabs all at 8-ish means you genuinely cannot have it all, so pick your lane and commit. Saturday is for the party people, Sunday for the believers. Whatever you choose, note the recurring theme in this preview: multiple rooms flashing "few tickets left." Pittsburgh is showing up this weekend. You should too — just buy ahead, because the door might not save you a spot.
