Between now and Sunday, the Triangle's small rooms are running one of the densest homegrown lineups of the year — two record-release parties, a run of all-ages bills, and a dance party built entirely out of early-2000s nostalgia. Here's how to spend it.
Thursday eases you in gently. Over at Local 506, the all-ages engine keeps humming with Jesse Fox, joined by Roxanne Fortney and Sam Thorn — the kind of low-stakes, high-reward weeknight bill the 506 has specialized in since 1992. It's the warm-up. Pace yourself.
Friday, August 14 is the main event, and it's a beautiful scheduling collision: two release parties across two towns on the same night. In the Cat's Cradle Back Room, The Shoaldiggers celebrate their new full-length Wind, Wires, and Ways to Wander with Asheville soul crew Hustle Souls — nine-piece swamp-grass maximalism in the region's most beloved small room (see our feature this week). Meanwhile, three miles west at Local 506, tenderqueer throw a single-release party of their own, with Marble Berry Seeds and the Chicken Ranch Road Show. One night, two Triangle acts marking new music on stages a short drive apart. You genuinely cannot go wrong; pick by sound, or catch an early set at one and drive to the other.
Also Friday, for those who prefer their weekend in the main room: the Cat's Cradle Back Room hosts Margot Sinclair with Five Door Sedan on the 13th — worth flagging if you want to string Thursday and Friday into one Carrboro bender.
Saturday, August 15 is when the Triangle stops pretending to be tasteful. Cat's Cradle turns its main stage over to Barbies vs. Bratz: Y2K Party, a 10 p.m. dance night engineered to make everyone who was alive in 2003 lose their minds responsibly. This is not a show; it's a decision to have fun without irony. Wear the low-rise something you swore you'd never wear again.
Sunday, August 16 brings the weekend down for a soft landing at Local 506, where Owen & The Smokes headline with Dune Blue and Celler Dwellers — an all-ages closer for anyone whose Saturday-night dance stamina wrote a check their Sunday couldn't cash.
