A Field Guide to Roanoke & the New River Valley's Live-Music Rooms
Cardinal News ran a headline in April that locals have been muttering into their beers for years: "Roanoke is quietly becoming Virginia's Music City." Quietly is the operative word. We don't have a single glass tower with a corporate name bolted to it. What we have instead is a scatter of stubborn, specific rooms — a former sanctuary, a farm brewery, a rooftop, an amphitheater wedged against the river — each with its own gravity. Here's your map. Keep it in the glovebox.
5 Points Music Sanctuary (1217 Maple Ave., Roanoke). The name isn't marketing. It's a converted worship space, and the room still carries that hush-then-roar quality when a bluegrass band digs in. Open since 2017, 5 Points also runs an outdoor arm, the Dog Bowl at Black Dog Salvage, and threads a genuine hearing-accessibility mission through its programming.
Martin's Downtown (Kirk Ave.). The city's jam-band and reggae clubhouse since 2005 — low ceilings, high tolerance, and an annual Jerry Garcia birthday "Shakedown Street" throwdown that turns the block into a tie-dye reunion.
The Spot on Kirk (Kirk Ave.). Opened 2016 and proudly hard to categorize: goth DJ nights, all-ages original bills, singer-songwriter Sundays. If a young Roanoke band is playing its first real show, odds are it's here.
The Exchange Music Hall (201 S. Jefferson St.). The new kid, open since December 2025, already booking national touring acts with a FloydFest-adjacent sensibility. This is the room most likely to change the math of what tours stop in Roanoke.
Jefferson Center — Shaftman Performance Hall. A former Jefferson High School turned acoustically pristine listening room, the address for jazz, blues and bluegrass that deserves silence between songs. After 15 years, longtime programmer Cyrus Pace moved on this spring — a genuine changing-of-the-guard for the scene.
Berglund Center. The 1971 arena-and-coliseum complex for the big-ticket, big-parking-lot nights.
Dr Pepper Park at the Bridges. Outdoor summer-series real estate on the edge of downtown, running national acts, tribute bands and festivals from spring through fall under president Waynette Anderson.
Elmwood Park Amphitheater. The civic heart of Roanoke's summer: the Budweiser Summer Series brings the marquee names, while the free Thursday "Party in Elmwood" keeps the lawn busy on the cheap.
Cross the mountain into the New River Valley and the texture changes:
The Milk Parlor (211 Draper Rd. NW, Blacksburg). A small, warm listening-and-comedy room downtown that punches far above its capacity — the kind of place a touring folk-rock band plays on a Saturday and remembers.
Rising Silo Brewery (2351 Glade Rd., Blacksburg). A literal farm brewery down a gravel road, live music most evenings Wednesday through Saturday. Bring a chair, bring bug spray, bring cash for the band.
The Lyric Theatre (Blacksburg). The restored downtown movie-and-music house that anchors College Avenue.
XYZ Gallery (Blacksburg). The DIY art-space wildcard for experimental and all-ages bills.
And just off the edge of the map, worth the drive: the Floyd Country Store, whose Friday Night Jamboree has been serving up flatfoot-dancing bluegrass longer than most of these rooms have existed.
That's the ecosystem — sanctuary to silo, arena to gravel lot. Over the next six weeks we'll be in most of them. The through-line, from a business owner's April boast to a Wednesday night at Rising Silo, is that Roanoke and the NRV stopped waiting for permission to matter. Fold the map.
