There is a certain kind of Roanoker who will tell you, unprompted, that they don't do hair metal. That same Roanoker will be at Dr Pepper Park on Saturday night screaming every word of "Cherry Pie." Own it.

The weekend's anchor is Warrant at Dr Pepper Park at the Bridges on Saturday, July 11 — the Sunset Strip survivors slotting into the park's 2026 summer series, which president Waynette Anderson built this year around a promise of national acts, tribute nights and festivals. A late-'80s glam-metal band playing an outdoor stage against the Roanoke River is exactly the sort of gloriously incongruous night this city does well: leather vests, lawn chairs, and someone's dad air-guitaring near the funnel cakes. Gates and set times run typical summer-series hours; check the park's app before you head down.

If distortion isn't your Saturday mood, the same weekend offers a quieter civic ritual. Party in Elmwood — the free Thursday concert series on the Elmwood Park lawn — has already opened its summer run, so Thursday drinkers and dancers had their fix before the weekend even started, and the amphitheater stays warm for the bigger Budweiser Summer Series nights stacking up later this month and into fall.

The real move this weekend, though, is to treat it as a scouting trip. Roanoke's summer is front-loaded with outdoor spectacle, but the clubs never actually go dark. Martin's Downtown will be doing what Martin's does — reggae, jam, a bar full of regulars who know the bartender's dog's name. The Spot on Kirk keeps its calendar deliberately unpredictable. And across the mountain, Rising Silo Brewery in Blacksburg runs live music most evenings Wednesday through Saturday, which means a Friday drive down Glade Road and a beer in a field is always a legitimate plan B.

Here's why a Warrant show matters more than the setlist suggests. Dr Pepper Park's whole 2026 pitch — three festivals, six comedy nights, a run of national names and tributes — is a bet that Roanoke will show up, all summer, for a wide spread of acts, and not just the ones the cool kids pre-approve. A packed lawn for a nostalgia act is the same data point promoters read when deciding whether the next tour routes through here or blows past to Charlotte. Every ticket is a vote for more.

So go. Wear the vest ironically or sincerely; nobody at Dr Pepper Park is checking your motives. Get there early enough to eat, stay late enough to lose your voice, and remember that the funnel-cake line is its own kind of community meeting. Roanoke summers are short and loud. This one starts with a power ballad.
