Two Nights at Harlow's: Low Cut Connie's Piano Riot, Then a Texas Songwriting Summit
If your idea of a great week is one where the same Midtown room swings from sweat-drenched piano-rock to hushed roots-country reverence, Harlow's has you covered. Two shows on the J Street calendar bookend the coming stretch, and they could not be more different — which is exactly the argument for buying tickets to both.
First, Tuesday, July 14: Low Cut Connie. Adam Weiner's Philadelphia band has spent a decade turning clubs into revival tents, and there is no half-measure version of this show. Weiner is the rare frontman who will end the night standing on the piano, and Harlow's — with its balcony sightlines down onto the stage — is a nearly ideal room to watch him do it. Barack Obama once put Low Cut Connie on a summer playlist; the band has been dining out on nobody's approval but the crowd's ever since. If you have been feeling flat, this is the defibrillator.
Then, Friday, July 17, the register drops way down for Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore. This is a genuine songwriters' summit: Alvin, the Blasters guitarist and Grammy-winning California roots lifer, alongside Gilmore, the Flatlanders' high-lonesome Texas tenor. The two released the collaborative record TexiCali in 2024 and have been touring the partnership since, trading verses and old road stories between songs. Where Tuesday is about catharsis, Friday is about craft — the kind of show where you lean in for the between-song patter as much as the tunes.
Two tips. Harlow's shows tend to run tight, so the openers matter — get there early enough to eat, because the kitchen is part of the appeal and the floor fills. And these are opposite-energy nights: wear something you don't mind sweating through Tuesday, and bring your listening ears Friday.
