Sailfest Is Dead. Long Live Celebrate New London.

Let's rip the bandage off: after roughly 45 years, Sailfest is gone. Budget constraints did what nor'easters never could, and the region's biggest summer party has been retired. Before you pour one out on Bank Street, know this — something took its place, and it lands this Saturday, Jul 11.

It's called Celebrate New London, and it is Sailfest's leaner, downtown-first successor, produced by the City of New London, the New London Cultural District, the Garde Arts Center and a coalition of local businesses. The pitch: a one-day festival that pours the crowd into the actual downtown instead of just the waterfront edge of it.

Here's the shape of the day. Two main stages — one at Parade Plaza, one out on Custom House Pier — carry the headline music, while bars, restaurants and shops downtown host their own sets, turning the whole grid into a venue. WFSB reported more than 40 bands and roughly 50 vendors, which is a genuinely absurd amount of programming for a single Saturday. Add a pop-up artisan village and food trucks lined up along Lower State Street and you've got a festival you navigate on foot, drink in hand, following whichever bassline is loudest.

And then the part nobody was ever going to cancel: the fireworks. The Mashantucket Pequot Thames River fireworks — the tribe has sponsored the show since 1993 — go up around 9:15 p.m. over the Thames, viewable from both the New London and Groton banks, with the soundtrack simulcast on local radio. If you've ever watched the sky light up over the river with a marching-band-loud crowd behind you, you know why this one survived the reformat.

A word on the branding chaos, because you'll hit it: some aggregator sites and old festival calendars still list "Sailfest, July 10–12." Ignore them. The on-the-ground event is Celebrate New London, and it's Saturday. If a listing tells you otherwise, it's reading a ghost.

Strategy, from people who have parked in New London on a festival night before. Come early, park once, and walk everywhere. Downtown is the whole footprint, so pick a base — Parade Plaza or the pier — and let the day pull you between them. Telegraph, the Autonomous Zone record store that quietly anchors New London's DIY scene, was named among the participating downtown businesses, so build a lap that swings past State and Golden Streets to see what the underground's doing while the main stages roar.

Is it Sailfest? No. It's smaller, tighter, more downtown, less tall-ships-and-turnpike-traffic. But that may be the honest version of what a mid-size shoreline city can throw in 2026 — a festival that fills its own streets instead of straining to be a regional monument. Forty-plus bands, fireworks over the Thames, and a walkable grid that finally acts like the arts district it keeps calling itself.

Bring cash for the food trucks, a layer for the river breeze after dark, and low expectations for parking after 6 p.m. Everything else, New London's got covered. See you at the pier around 9:15, faces tipped up.
