This Weekend: Free Fiddles in the Plaza, Country Under the Oak, and the Storm-Proof Case for Staying Downtown
Let's be honest about mid-July in the Ancient City: it's hot, it's humid, the afternoon thunderheads are punctual, and the big shed out on Anastasia is dark. The St. Augustine Amphitheatre has nothing on its calendar this weekend — the next headliner, Jordan Davis, isn't until Aug 16 — which means the good stuff is happening exactly where it should, on foot, downtown, for free.
Start tonight. It's Thursday, so the city's free Concerts in the Plaza series takes over the century-old gazebo in the Plaza de la Constitución, 6 to 8 p.m., with the Ancient City Slickers on the bill. Bring a folding chair and low expectations about parking; the city runs the STAR Downtown Circulator shuttle for exactly this reason, and registered St. Johns County residents get a parking break. The city bills the series, not unreasonably, as the best way to spend a Thursday night in St. Augustine.
A two-minute walk away, Colonial Oak Music Park fires up its weekly Country Night beneath that enormous live oak inside the Colonial Quarter — the Pendleton Whisky-sponsored Thursday tradition that's become the reliable spine of the downtown free-music week. Between the Plaza and the Oak, you can spend an entire Thursday evening downtown without paying a cover or moving your car twice.
For the rest of the weekend, the move is the rooms that never close. Tradewinds Lounge on Charlotte Street runs live music all seven nights; house band Matanzas is your safe bet Friday and into the week, in a teak-and-bamboo space that's been at it since 1945. Over on Anastasia Boulevard, Sarbez! keeps its back room weird and loud with local indie acts and late Friday–Saturday hours until 2 a.m. arcade cabinets, shuffleboard, and grilled cheese included. And Prohibition Kitchen on St. George Street keeps the pedestrian mall humming with its own rotating live-music slate.
Out at the beach, The Original Café Eleven is quiet this particular weekend, but worth marking your calendar: its August run is loaded, starting with The Band Solstice on Aug 5. File it away.
Why does a free-music Thursday matter more than a stadium tour? Because this is what a 500-year-old city does well that a brand-new one can't fake: it hands you a walkable grid, a gazebo older than most American downtowns, a giant tree with a stage under it, and a bar that's been open since your grandparents were kids — all within a few blocks of the water. No ticket required.
