Salt Air and Sprung Floors: Tacoma's Live-Music Summer Opens This Weekend

Showbox Concerts at Dune Peninsula — the outdoor series that transforms the Point Defiance waterfront into Tacoma's best-smelling amphitheater — kicks the summer open Thursday, July 9, with rising country-folk singer Max McNown (5 p.m.). If you have never done a show out on the Dune, understand the logistics up front: there is no concert parking in the Dune lot, so ride Pierce Transit routes 10 and 11, grab a spot in the Point Ruston garage, or rideshare to the entrance. Downtown, the prettiest room in the city gets busy. Jeremy McComb brings his road-dog country to the Spanish Ballroom at McMenamins Elks Temple on Friday, July 10 — a Nashville-schooled songwriter in a 1916 lodge ballroom with a sprung dance floor practically engineered for two-stepping. Then on Sunday, July 12, the Ballroom hosts Americana up-and-comer Stella Prince, the kind of soft-focus Sunday-night booking that rewards anyone willing to treat live music as a seven-day-a-week habit rather than a Saturday indulgence.

Up the hill, the big room stirs too: the Tacoma Dome is listed for Forrest Frank's "The Jesus Generation Tour" on Friday, July 10, a reminder that even in a "slow" arena month, Grit City can move real numbers.

Here is why the opening weekend matters beyond the individual bills. Tacoma's summer is a relay: the Dune series hands off to the Ballroom's indoor calendar, which hands off to the clubs, which hand off to the free waterfront nights, and the baton never really touches the ground between July and September. Pack a layer for the Dune; the bay turns on you after sunset. Bring cash for the Ballroom coat check. And do not, under any circumstances, skip the Sunday show because it's a Sunday. That's amateur behavior, and it's July. Get out there.
