This Weekend, Tempe's Best Bet Is the Local One (as Usual)

The forecast says 110-plus. The Marquee's calendar says "see you in August." The rational Tempe music fan, therefore, points the car at Southern Avenue, because the only room reliably throwing live shows this weekend is the one that always is: the Yucca Tap Room.

Here's the shape of it. The Yucca's late-July run leans hard into homegrown rock, and this weekend is a fair sampler of the local ecosystem. Friday, Sentinel Hill takes the stage; Saturday brings The Ruins; Sunday, Cash Dean & The Rise close out the weekend. It's 21-and-up, it's indoors, it's affordable, and it is — critically, this time of year — climate-controlled to a temperature that will not send you to the ER.

Do not read the local billing as a downgrade. This is the version of Tempe music that actually renews itself. National tours are a weather report — they blow through and they're gone. A room full of Valley bands playing to a hometown crowd on a Saturday is the water table underneath the whole thing. These are the acts that, five or ten years from now, someone will claim they saw "back when they played the Yucca for a ten-dollar cover," in the same reverent tone people now use about the garage-rock kids who became the Gin Blossoms.

If you want a bigger room and are willing to wait a week, the Marquee finally stirs to life at the end of the month: British new-wave survivors The Fixx are booked for Wednesday, July 29 — a genuinely fun bit of "one thing led to another" nostalgia in an air-conditioned 1,500-cap barn. And the calendar thickens fast into August, with the Marquee stacking dates through the month. But that's next week's problem.

This weekend, the move is simple. Hydrate like it's a competitive event. Get to the Yucca early enough to actually hear the openers, who are frequently the best part of any local bill and are always the ones most grateful you showed. Tip the bar. Buy a shirt or a tape from whoever's selling one by the door — that merch table is often the difference between a band making rent and a band breaking up.

A note on expectation-setting, because summer does strange things to a scene: the crowds will be thinner than a February weekend, and that's fine. Thin crowds at local shows in July are not a verdict on the music; they're a verdict on the thermometer. The people who do turn out are the true believers, which makes for a warmer room in every sense. There is a particular intimacy to a well-attended-enough local show in the dead heat of summer — everyone present made a choice to be there instead of in the pool.

So make the choice. The bands are real, the AC is real, and the cover charge is less than what you'd spend cooling your apartment to the same temperature. Tempe's weekend belongs, once again, to the locals. Go be a local about it.
