This Friday: Beastie Boys by Proxy, Free by the River
The forecast for Friday night on the Toledo riverfront: loud, free, and faintly ridiculous in the best way. The whole appeal of the Beasties was the chaos of three guys finishing each other's sentences at a full sprint, and a covers act that can pull that off is doing legitimately hard work behind the goofy premise. That's the bet Imposters In Effect are making Friday, and a riverfront crowd is the ideal jury: forgiving, well-lubricated, and ready to shout every "Brooklyn!" back at the stage.

Party in the Park's not-so-secret structure is that the tribute headliner draws the crowd while a working local act gets the early slot — and the Buzz Anderson Band has logged the kind of regional bar-and-festival miles that make an outdoor set land. Get there for the opener, not just the gimmick. That's the difference between attending a Toledo show and actually supporting one.
What makes the evening worth clearing your calendar for isn't the setlist, though — it's the setting. Promenade Park's stage points out toward the Maumee, the Anthony Wayne Bridge strung with lights behind it, and on a July night the whole downtown reads like a city that decided to like itself. Admission is free. The beer is not, and the tents will be moving. Bring a chair, bring cash, bring the friend who claims they "don't really do live music" and watch them fail to stay seated through "Intergalactic."
A few logistics. Party in the Park runs Friday evenings through the summer, so parking downtown will be doing summer-Friday things — arrive early, walk a few blocks, don't fight it. It's family-friendly until it isn't, which is to say the kids will be dancing near the stage and the grown-ups will be three deep at the tent by the encore. Weather is the only real variable; this is an outdoor riverfront series, so check before you load the car.
The larger point, for the doubters: a free tribute night is exactly the sort of thing that keeps a mid-size music town limber. Nobody's pretending Imposters In Effect are Mike D, Ad-Rock and MCA. What they are is a reason for a few thousand Toledoans to stand by the river on a summer Friday and remember, collectively and at volume, that this stuff is fun. In a city that has fought to keep its rooms open, that is not a small thing.
