A Grateful Dead Cover Band on a Steamboat Dock, and Other Reasons to Skip the Beach
This is the weekend the Lake George waterfront stops pretending to be a family beach and admits it is a concert venue. On Saturday, July 11, from 4 to 11 p.m., Rock the Dock takes over the Lake George Steamboat Company pier — a stage ringed by the fleet, the crowd watching from the dock and from the decks of the boats themselves. It is a genuinely strange and wonderful staging concept, and the 2026 bill earns it.
Headlining are Dark Star Orchestra, the touring Grateful Dead re-creation act that has built a two-decade career on playing historic Dead setlists note-for-note — a smart booking for a lake full of people who own at least one tie-dye. Under them is one of the deeper roots-and-soul undercards you will see at a regional festival: Florida swamp-funk vets JJ Grey & Mofro, Birmingham soul revivalists St. Paul and The Broken Bones, the great Memphis organ statesman Booker T. Jones, Michigan bluesman Larry McCray, and young Atlanta guitar-slinger Eddie 9V. A portion of proceeds benefits Lake George American Legion Post 374, which is a nice reminder that even the tie-dye crowd can do some good.
If you would rather your Saturday not involve seven hours of standing, the region has quieter counter-programming. On Wednesday, July 8, the Lake Placid Sinfonietta opened its free Park Series in Mid's Park — Wednesdays through August 12, professional orchestral musicians playing to a lawn full of lawn chairs, which remains one of the best deals in American classical music. And this coming Sunday, July 12, the Sinfonietta's ticketed Symphony Series lands at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid at 7:30 p.m., with Maurice Cohn conducting Mozart's Symphony No. 25 and Beethoven's First.
Looking a few days ahead, Music on the Green in Saranac Lake keeps its Wednesday streak alive July 15 with Brooklyn-by-way-of-Peru psychedelic cumbia outfit Chicha Libre — a booking that tells you the volunteers running that series are not interested in playing it safe.
Here is the thing worth saying out loud: a region this size should not be able to land Booker T. Jones and a Grammy-caliber cumbia band and a full professional orchestra in the same seven-day stretch. Summer tourism dollars make it possible, sure — but somebody has to choose to spend those dollars on music this good instead of another fireworks barge. This weekend, somebody did. Reward them. Buy the ticket, or at least drop something real in the tip jar at the free shows.
Pack layers. Even in July the lake turns the evening cold the second the sun drops behind the mountains.
