Zydeco in a Lakeside Park, Jazz in a Movie House: A Weekend for the Curious
Tuesday's Songs at Mirror Lake just handed Lake Placid one of the finest bills of its summer — Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, the married Americana duo whose résumés run through Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble and Bob Dylan's touring band, playing Mid's Park for free on July 21. If you were there, you know. If you weren't, the series is not done making you regret it.
Coming up Tuesday, July 28, the same park hosts Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience — and this is not a themed-restaurant approximation of Louisiana music. Simien is a genuine Creole tradition-bearer, a Grammy winner (the Recording Academy literally created its zydeco/Cajun category the year he won it) whose family has been making this music on the Gulf bayou for generations. Watching a rubboard-and-accordion Mardi Gras run loose on a cold Adirondack lakeshore is exactly the kind of collision this series lives for. Get there by 6:45; the lawn fills.
For an indoor option with a very different temperature, point the car at Old Forge. The Strand Theatre, the beloved year-round movie house on Main Street, threads live concerts through its summer film schedule, with 2026 dates running Thursdays including July 23 and July 30. The programming leans acoustic and jazz-forward — pianist Ellen Rowe and saxophonist Mike Sakash are among the players in the Strand's orbit — and there is something deeply right about hearing a jazz duo in a small-town theater built for the movies.
Meanwhile the Wednesday drumbeat continues in Saranac Lake, where Music on the Green rolls on at Riverside Park: the Dwayne Haggins Band on July 22, roots-rockers Austin & The In-Laws on July 29, both free, both 7 to 9 p.m. Between Mirror Lake on Tuesdays and the Green on Wednesdays, a determined listener can catch nationally-touring talent two nights a week without ever buying a ticket.
The "why this matters" is almost embarrassingly simple. This region does not have the population to support this much music through ticket sales alone. It supports it through a patchwork — town parks, service clubs, a movie house willing to give up a screening for a concert, and audiences who understand that free shows are free because somebody upstream chose to make them free. That is a fragile, beautiful arrangement, and it holds only as long as the crowd holds up its end.
So this weekend, do the un-lazy thing. Skip one night of the deck bar. Drive to Old Forge, or plant a chair by Mirror Lake on Tuesday, and put real money in the bucket when it comes around. Zydeco on a mountain lake is not something most of the country gets to have. We do. Act like it.
