The Biggest Concert in Iowa History Is Happening in a College Football Stadium in Ames
Let's be honest about the scale of this. On Friday, July 17, Post Malone plays Jack Trice Stadium — the Iowa State football venue that seats somewhere north of 61,500 people — with Jelly Roll and Carter Faith opening. It's a stop on Post Malone's "The BIG ASS Stadium Tour Part 2," and when the tickets went on sale it was billed, credibly, as the biggest concert in Iowa history. Not the biggest in Ames. In Iowa.
Sit with the geography for a second. Ames is a town of roughly 66,000 people, and for one night its football stadium is going to hold nearly that many again. The last time this many people gathered in Ames for anything that wasn't a Cyclones game, it was probably also a Cyclones game. The tour was announced back in February, and cars will be pointed at Jack Trice from Des Moines, from Cedar Rapids, from every small town in a two-hour radius, all for a lineup that shouldn't make sense on paper and completely does in practice: a genre-melting pop-rapper, a tattooed country-rap redemption story in Jelly Roll, and a rising country voice in Carter Faith.
That's the thing about Post Malone as a headliner — he is the sound of genre borders collapsing. He came up as a hip-hop and pop figure and has spent recent years leaning hard into country and rock, and the bill reflects it. Jelly Roll made the same crossing from the other direction. Put them in a football stadium in central Iowa and you get a crowd that doesn't sort neatly into "rap fans" or "country fans" — just people who show up.
Now, does a one-night stadium megaconcert have anything to do with the Ames scene that plays taprooms and park bandshells the other 364 days of the year? Directly, not much. Post Malone isn't going to swing by Alluvial for a nightcap. But indirectly, it matters more than it looks. A show this size proves the region can move tens of thousands of people to Ames for music and get them all fed, parked, and home again. That's infrastructure — hotels, restaurants, rideshare, the whole apparatus — and infrastructure built for a stadium show doesn't disappear the next morning. It's the same reason a town wants a marquee event even if most of its music life happens at a smaller scale.
There's also just the civic fact of it. For a lot of people in central Iowa, this will be the biggest concert they ever attend, and it's happening twenty minutes from a lot of their front doors instead of requiring a road trip to Minneapolis or Chicago. That's not nothing. A scene is partly built on the memory of the huge night everyone was at, and Ames is about to bank one.
If you've got a ticket, get there early, hydrate, and make peace with the parking. If you don't, find high ground somewhere east of campus around 9 p.m. and listen — a stadium that full has a way of leaking out into the whole town.
