The Best Ticket of the Summer Was Free: Tides & Tunes Wraps Another Season by the Water

The 2026 Tides & Tunes season closed last night, and it closed the way it should have: with a band called the Jarflys playing to the terrace at the Annapolis Maritime Museum, the creek going dark behind them, and not a dime changing hands at any door — because there is no door. That's the whole magic trick of the thing, and it's worth pausing over now that another run has ended.

For the uninitiated: Tides & Tunes is the museum's free Thursday-evening summer concert series, staged outdoors on the terrace by the water at 723 Second St in Eastport. You bring a chair. You bring the kids. You watch the light quit over the water while a band plays. It is the most reliably pleasant recurring event in a town that has a lot of them, and this year's slate carried it clean from June into mid-August — Dublin 5 opened the series back on June 11, A Classic Case took a June date, and July rolled through the Timmie Metz Band featuring Tambo, the One Night Only Band, and the John Frase Project before the Jarflys brought it home on Thu, Aug 13.

Which July Thursday held which act is, honestly, a little fuzzy in the public record — — but the shape of the season is not in doubt, and neither is its ending. Aug 13 was confirmed, act and date, as the closer. The Jarflys got the last sunset.

Tides & Tunes isn't alone out here, either. Across town, Quiet Waters Park ran its own free summer concert series with food trucks and family-friendly programming — the Kelly Bell Band and the Sandra Dean Band both turn up on the 2026 documentation, with a concert listed for Aug 1. Between the two, a Chesapeake family could have soundtracked most of its summer weekends without buying a ticket. That's not an accident. That's a scene that has decided, correctly, that live music is civic infrastructure.

Now for the honest part, because a scene report that only cheerleads isn't a report. If you're looking for the summer's great Annapolis-made record to pair with all this live sound, the cupboard is thinner than it should be. The one local recording project that surfaced this season — a collaborative effort billed as "The Sound We Make," profiled by What's Up? Media as Annapolis musicians mixing it up — is exactly the kind of thing this town should be shouting about, and yet we couldn't pin down a confirmed release date or format from what's publicly available. Beyond that, no Annapolis-area album or EP with a locked summer-2026 date turned up at all. For a place this dense with players, that's a gap — and gaps are worth naming so somebody fills them.

But that's a note for the fall. Last night was for the water. The 2026 Tides & Tunes season is in the books, it cost nothing, and it was better than plenty of things that don't. The terrace goes quiet now until next June. Bring a chair when it comes back.
