Face/Off Rises From the Dead: Your Aug 13–15 Plan

Some weekends you preview because there are shows. This one you circle in ink, because after years of dormancy, one of Athens' great communal traditions is climbing back out of the ground — and it's bringing about twenty bands with it.

But first, ease into it. Thursday, Aug 13, Luke Borchelt plays the Georgia Theatre Rooftop at 215 N. Lumpkin St, and honestly, is there a better place to be on a mid-August Athens evening? The Rooftop is the open-air perch above the historic main stage — the same building that was a YMCA, a Masonic temple, a Sears, and a movie house before a 2009 fire nearly ended the whole story and a labor-of-love rebuild reopened it in 2011. On a summer night, with the heat finally breaking and the sun going down over Lumpkin Street, it's the correct room. Go up, get a drink, let the week fall off your shoulders.

Then rest up, because Saturday, Aug 15, is the big one. Athens Face/Off 2026 takes over the 40 Watt Club (285 W. Washington St), with roughly twenty local bands, doors at 6pm and music at 7pm. That's a full night — pace your snacks accordingly — and it's happening in the definitive Athens rock club, the ~460-capacity room that launched R.E.M., the B-52's, Pylon, and Widespread Panic and got its Walk of Fame nod in 2024. If you're going to resurrect a sprawling multi-band local showcase, this is the address to do it at.

The word that keeps surfacing around Face/Off is "return." As WUGA reported on Aug 8, the event is coming back after years of dormancy — and that dormancy is the whole point. In a town that spent a stretch watching rooms go quiet (the shuttered Caledonia Lounge still stings), a twenty-band local blowout roaring back to life at the 40 Watt is less a concert than a statement of intent. It says the scene didn't just survive the fallow years; it kept a guest list.

WUGA's Joseph Mazzola framed it about as well as it can be framed: "Local music scenes are always collaborative projects." That's the ethos of a night like this. Twenty bands don't share a stage for the money — there isn't any, not really — they do it because a scene is a thing you build together or don't build at all. Face/Off is the potluck version of Athens music: everybody brings a set, everybody eats.

So here's how I'd run it. Thursday, go up to the Rooftop for Luke Borchelt and a sunset — a low-stakes, high-reward warm-up. Take Friday off; you'll need it. Then Saturday, be at the 40 Watt when doors open at 6, because with twenty bands on a bill the early sets are where you find the act you'll be bragging about having "seen first" by October. Music starts at 7. Bring stamina.

Athens summers are supposed to be sleepy, and mostly this one has been. But every so often the quiet season throws you a night that reminds you why you love a music town in the first place — the kind where the whole scene shows up in one room and dares itself to be great. Face/Off is back. Don't watch this one from home.
