Weekend Preview, Aug 14–15: A King, a Professor, and the Ghosts of Fleetwood Mac
Some weekends make you choose a genre and commit. This one makes you choose a decade. Between Friday and Saturday, Augusta serves up vintage country, sharp-edged hip hop, and a note-perfect resurrection of one of rock's most gloriously dysfunctional bands. Here's how the nights lay out.
Friday, Aug 14 — Ronnie McDowell, "Red White and Blue Tour," Imperial Theatre, 7 p.m. The Imperial is Augusta's only operating historic theater, an 853-seat house that opened back in 1918, and it's a fitting room for an artist with this much road behind him. McDowell brings the "Red White and Blue Tour" to that Art Deco stage at 7 p.m., and the pairing of a classic-country name with the city's most storied surviving hall is the kind of match that just fits. If you like your country with some mileage and your venues with some history, plant yourself downtown early.
Friday, Aug 14 — C.Shreve the Professor + OC From NC, Joe's Underground. Same night, different world. Head down the stairs into Joe's Underground, the subterranean Broad Street club that runs on variety, and you'll find a genuine hip-hop bill: C.Shreve the Professor with OC From NC. This is the Augusta live-music ecosystem working exactly as designed — a vintage country crooner in a 1918 theater and a lyric-forward rap show in a basement club, both happening on the same Friday, a few blocks apart. Pick your lane, or if you've got the stamina, catch McDowell's early set and slide over to Joe's after.
Saturday, Aug 15 — Rumours ATL, Miller Theater, doors 6:30 / show 7:30, $43.15–$75.15. Then comes the big one. Rumours ATL, the Fleetwood Mac tribute, takes the Miller Theater stage on Saturday — doors at 6:30, show at 7:30, tickets running $43.15 to $75.15. Let's talk about why this is the right room for this show. The Miller is Augusta's restored 1940 movie palace, roughly 1,300 seats wrapped in Italian marble terrazzo and black walnut, reopened in 2018 after a roughly $25 million restoration. Fleetwood Mac's catalog — all that gauzy heartbreak and those interlocking harmonies — deserves a room with acoustics and atmosphere to match, and the Miller has both in spades. "Dreams," "The Chain," "Go Your Own Way," "Landslide": that songbook was practically built for a plush, gorgeous hall where you can hear every vocal blend and every guitar figure ring out.
A tribute act lives or dies on two things — the songs and the setting. The songs here are bulletproof; nobody wrote a bad one in that late-'70s stretch. And the setting is arguably the finest music room in the city. Put a tight Mac tribute in a restored movie palace and you've engineered a night that flatters everyone involved: the band, the catalog, and the room itself.
So here's the weekend math. Friday belongs to contrast — a country legend uptown at the Imperial, a hip-hop showcase underground at Joe's, two shows that couldn't be more different sharing the same night and the same neighborhood. Saturday belongs to spectacle, with the Mac faithful filing into the Miller for a catalog that never stops aging well. Three shows, three moods, one very good weekend to be a music fan in Augusta. Plan accordingly, and maybe hydrate.
