The Big Weekend: Country Rowdiness, Hip-Hop Royalty, and the Best Fake Van Halen Alive
If you've been rationing your concert budget through this heat, spend it now. The stretch from Friday to Sunday is the fullest live-music weekend Bakersfield has seen all summer, and it's a genuine cross-section of what this town actually listens to — which is to say, a lot more than steel guitar.
Friday, August 14 — Gavin Adcock at the Dignity Health Theater, 7 p.m. Adcock is the current avatar of country's rowdy, rough-edged wing, the kind of act that draws a crowd more interested in hollering along than analyzing the fiddle part, and the downtown theater is exactly the right-sized, air-conditioned room for it. It's the marquee country ticket of the window, and it'll be loud.
Also Friday, August 14 — Pepper at the Historic Nile Theater. The Kona reggae-rock veterans bring their beach-party bounce to Old Town Kern, which is about as tonally far from Gavin Adcock as you can get while staying in the same zip code. That's the point. Pick your Friday by mood.
Saturday, August 15 — Too $hort and Mozzy headline a stacked hip-hop bill at the Dignity Health Arena, with a lineup that reads like a West Coast rap syllabus: DJ Quik, RJMrLA, 310babii, Peysoh, Fenix Flexin and more, as part of a hip-hop festival slate. Too $hort playing a Bakersfield arena is a reminder that the Central Valley has always been more central to California rap than the coasts admit. This is a big-room, big-bass night, and the arena's the only place in town that can hold it.
Sunday, August 16 — Fan Halen at Temblor Brewing Co., 7:30 p.m., 18+. Look, I'm not going to insult you: it's a Van Halen tribute band. But it bills itself as the world's premier one, and there is no more honest way to close a brutal Valley summer than in an air-conditioned brewery hall while a very committed man in the David Lee Roth role does the scissor kicks so you don't have to. Sometimes catharsis is a cover of "Panama." Bakersfield understands this in its bones.
One housekeeping note: a country date at Temblor for the same weekend was cancelled, so don't go looking for it. Everything else above I'd bet a taco truck dinner on, but reconfirm times before you drive.
Add it up and the weekend is the whole thesis of this archive in miniature. In three days one mid-size city offers rowdy country, reggae-rock, a West Coast hip-hop summit, and glorious hair-metal karaoke — spread across a downtown theater, an arena, a century-old theater in Old Town Kern, and a brewery on Buck Owens Boulevard. The palaces closed. The town did not stop making noise. It just spread the noise around, kept the AC running, and dared the heat to do something about it.
