Nine Days, One Grandstand: MontanaFair Turns Billings Into a Concert Town

Tomorrow the city changes shape. MontanaFair opens Aug 7 and runs through Aug 15 at MetraPark, and for nine days the fairgrounds become the biggest gathering in the state — 200,000-plus people over the run, a PRCA rodeo, the Mighty Thomas Carnival midway, funnel cake by the acre, and, at the center of it, a grandstand concert series that quietly puts more national acts in front of Billings than any single week of the year.

The 2026 Pepsi Concert Series lineup leans hard into range. It opens Aug 7 with YUNGBLUD, the British genre-blur provocateur whose arrival at a Montana fair grandstand is itself a small statement about how the fair books now — this is not your grandfather's country-only midway anymore. Aug 8 swings to pure fun with Hairball, the arena-scale '80s rock tribute machine that has become a fair-circuit institution for a reason: it is impossible to attend a Hairball show and remain in a bad mood. And Aug 9 brings Christian-pop hitmaker TobyMac, closing the opening weekend with the kind of family-filling, sing-along draw that fairs are built to serve.

Fair week also spills well past the grandstand. The same Friday MontanaFair opens, Dexter and The Moonrocks — the buzzy "space grunge" country outfit — are booked into The Pub Station downtown (Aug 7), giving the club crowd a rowdier alternative to the fairgrounds. And midweek, the arena itself hosts a separate heavyweight: Shinedown brings its "Dance, Kid, Dance" tour to MetraPark's First Interstate Arena on Aug 12, with Coheed and Cambria and From Ashes to New — a full-scale rock night wedged right into fair week.

Here's the turn. It's easy to be snobby about a fair grandstand — the sound bounces, the seats are metal, someone near you is definitely eating a corn dog during the ballad. But the MontanaFair concert series is, functionally, the single most important cultural booking pipeline in this region. For a lot of Billings kids, a fair grandstand show is the first concert, the one that makes a lifelong fan out of a nine-year-old on a dad's shoulders. A city that wants a music scene in 2040 should be very glad it has this in 2026.

Buy the grandstand seat, ride the Ferris wheel, eat the thing on a stick. Nine days only, and then Billings goes quiet again.
