Honky-Tonk Holdout: Why Touch of Texas Still Matters

In a market where "the venue" is usually a park, a ballpark or a museum back room, Touch of Texas is a genuine outlier: an actual concert club, with an actual door, booking actual touring acts. That it happens to be a country honky-tonk is not a footnote. In Greater Binghamton, it might be the whole point.

Here is what the room is, unromantically. Touch of Texas runs general-admission country and roots shows in Binghamton, with "table seating available on a first-come basis" — which is the honky-tonk social contract in one sentence. Get there early, plant your people at a table, and the night is yours. Show up late and you are standing, which is also fine, because a country club that nobody stands up in is doing it wrong. Admission is 16-and-up with valid ID, so this is a room that lets the younger crowd in the door — no small thing in a scene that just lost an all-ages DIY room downtown.

The reason it belongs in a spotlight, though, is that it is still booking touring country in 2026, which is more than most rooms in the region can say. Case in point: Redferrin plays Touch of Texas on Thursday, Aug 27 — just past our summer window, but proof of life that matters. A ticketed touring-country date on the calendar means the club is doing the unglamorous work of routing, advancing and selling a room, the exact muscle that atrophies everywhere else in a thin market.

That is the quiet argument for Touch of Texas as the region's country mainstay: it is not waiting for a season, a sponsor or good weather. The park series are seasonal by definition — ten Tuesdays and out. A club is a club year-round, which means it is the closest thing Broome County has to a room that develops an audience on purpose rather than by picnic.

None of this requires pretending the place is something it isn't. It is a honky-tonk. The genre lane is narrow, the seating is first-come-or-lump-it, and if your taste runs to noise-rock you will find the parking lot more interesting than the bill on most nights. But narrow and alive beats broad and shuttered, and this room is emphatically alive.

Why it matters: every scene needs at least one place that keeps the lights on when the summer series pack up their folding chairs. Touch of Texas is that place for the country and roots crowd — a standing (or, ideally, sitting-at-a-good-table) reminder that Greater Binghamton can still host a real ticketed show indoors, on a Thursday, in a room built for it.

Get there early. Grab the table. The country's not going anywhere, and neither, thankfully, is the club.
