If the Buffalo Chip is the rally's big-tent festival, the Full Throttle Saloon — the sprawling, self-proclaimed "World's Largest Biker Bar" north of Sturgis — is its rowdier, more mythologized cousin, and its 86th-rally concert schedule holds its own against anything else in the Hills this week. Beginning Friday, Aug. 7, the day the rally officially opens, Full Throttle rolls out a headliner nearly every night of the run.
The confirmed sequence: Blackberry Smoke on Friday, Aug. 7; Sammy Hagar & Friends on Saturday, Aug. 8 — the Red Rocker backed by his usual gang of ringers; Jamey Johnson on Sunday, Aug. 9; 38 Special on Monday, Aug. 10; Miranda Lambert on Tuesday, Aug. 11; and Rob Zombie on Wednesday, Aug. 12, with more acts filling the back half of the week.
That is a genuinely remarkable week of booking for a bar, even a 600-acre one. Consider Tuesday: Miranda Lambert, one of the biggest names in country, playing a biker saloon the same night Lynyrd Skynyrd is up the road at the Chip. Rally week is the one stretch of the year when the Black Hills has so much touring firepower that two venues can go head-to-head with A-list headliners on a Tuesday and both draw. Try to imagine that in literally any other American town of 7,000.
The Full Throttle's whole identity leans into excess — it burned down in 2015 and rebuilt, it's been the subject of its own reality show, and its capacity claims stretch into five figures. But strip away the mythology and what's left is a serious concert operation that, for ten days, books like a mid-major festival. Blackberry Smoke's Southern-rock jamming, Hagar's arena-rock nostalgia, Johnson's outlaw-country gravel, Lambert's crossover star power, Zombie's horror-metal theater — that's a bill designed to catch every corner of the rally crowd, and it will.
Why it matters: the Chip and Full Throttle together are the reason "Sturgis" means something to musicians who've never owned a motorcycle. Two venues, one small town, nine nights, and a headliner count that rivals a major festival — that's the machine that turns a rally into a genuine live-music event. It's easy to be snobby about biker bars. It's harder to name another bar booking Miranda Lambert and Rob Zombie in the same week.
