Outlaw Field Wakes Up: Kaleo, Then a Kitten Surprise
The best thing about summer in Boise is that the concert calendar stops being polite and starts being greedy. This week the Idaho Botanical Garden's Outlaw Field turns the lights on for a stretch that would look ambitious in a city twice our size — three headliners in seven days, all on the old penitentiary grounds with the Foothills going pink behind the stage.
It starts tonight. Kaleo — the Icelandic blues-rock outfit that turned a slide guitar and Jökull Júlíusson's granite falsetto into arena fuel — headlines Friday, July 10. This is a band that once played a set on a floating chunk of Icelandic lava; a Boise garden at golden hour is, by their standards, a cozy gig. Gates open at 5:30, which is the civilized way to do a rock show: blanket, picnic, sunburn, catharsis.
Then the week's emotional gut-punch. Rainbow Kitten Surprise brings its genre-refusing, deeply devoted following to Outlaw Field on Tuesday, July 14, with Australian indie darlings Spacey Jane opening. RKS shows have a particular chemistry — the crowd sings the quiet parts louder than the loud parts — and pairing them with Spacey Jane's sun-bleached melancholy is the kind of double bill that sells out a lawn.
The victory lap comes Thursday, July 16, when Max McNown headlines with The Jack Wharff Band in support. McNown is the streaming-era country-folk story — a kid with an acoustic guitar and a few hundred million streams — and he's landing at exactly the size of room where you can still see his face.
Why does a three-show week at one venue matter? Because Outlaw Field is Boise's proof that we don't have to drive to Salt Lake or fly to Seattle to catch a band mid-ascent.
