First, an honest note about right now: this particular week — call it July 20 to 26 — is one of the quieter stretches on the summer grid, at least among ticketed rooms I can confirm. Boise's free downtown series, Alive After 5, traditionally fills Wednesday evenings on the Grove Plaza with a headliner and an opener, 5 to 8 p.m., and would ordinarily cover the gap. Consider this the deep breath before the sprint.

Because the sprint is spectacular. Starting Tuesday, July 28, Outlaw Field runs three headliners in four nights, and it's the strongest run the venue books all summer. Alabama Shakes headline July 28 with Billy Allen & The Pollies opening — Brittany Howard's band returning to the road with that gospel-sized, floorboard-rattling Southern rock that sounds engineered for an open field at dusk. Two nights later, July 30, Slightly Stoopid bring their sunblock-and-bass-bins reggae-rock, the platonic ideal of a Botanical Garden lawn show.

Then the oddest, most delightful booking of the bunch: The Australian Pink Floyd Show on July 31. If you've never seen a Floyd tribute done at this scale, understand that the "tribute" framing undersells it — this is a full laser-and-inflatable production that has toured the actual Pulse-era spectacle to arenas worldwide. Squeezed onto the old rec yard, it's going to look genuinely absurd, in the best way.

What makes Outlaw Field special isn't just the lineup; it's the frame around it. The stage sits inside a working botanical garden on historic prison grounds, which means your sightline includes flowers, sandstone, and the Foothills all at once. Gates open at 5:30, and the smart move is to treat the early hour as the amenity — get in, spread a blanket, watch the light go long across the high desert before a note is played.

The venue's rise says something larger about Boise. A decade ago, a band the size of Alabama Shakes routing through southern Idaho in July would have been a fluke. Now it's a Tuesday. The Botanical Garden series has become the gravitational center of the regional summer, the reason the map finally bends toward us instead of around us.

So use this quiet week to rest your feet and your wallet. Next Tuesday the old rec yard fills up again, and it doesn't stop for the better part of a week. Fifty years ago this was where you counted down your sentence. Now it's where you lose track of time on purpose.
