This Weekend: Aaron Lewis Cracks the SKyPAC Marquee, Lucero Lights Up The Grove
Two very different rooms, two very different nights, one very good weekend. If you've been waiting for the summer calendar to earn its keep, it starts tonight.
Tonight — Aaron Lewis at SKyPAC (Thu, Jul 23, 8 p.m.). The Staind frontman turned unlikely country traditionalist brings his solo show to the downtown theater, and SKyPAC is exactly the right box for it: a seated, acoustically serious room where the between-song quiet is part of the deal. Lewis's solo sets live and die on that intimacy — a guy, a guitar, a catalog that swings from arena-rock scars to backporch country — and this is a room built to hold the hush. Saturday — Lucero with Justin Wells at The Grove (Sat, Jul 25). Now for the other end of the spectrum. Memphis's Lucero has spent a quarter-century turning the space between punk, country, and soul into its own genre, and they do it best outdoors, loud, and a couple beers deep. Kentucky's own Justin Wells — a road-worn, big-hearted songwriter's songwriter — opens at 6, with Lucero on at 8. The Grove has been quietly stacking the summer's most interesting roots-and-rock bookings, and this is the marquee example.
The contrast is the whole point of living here. In the span of 48 hours you can go from a plush theater seat watching a former nu-metal star pick his way through country ballads to a sweaty open-air field hollering along with a Lucero encore. Most cities this size get one of those options. Bowling Green gets both, inside a five-minute drive.
A note for planners: if you're only good for one, weigh the vibe, not the fame. SKyPAC is the sit-still, listen-close night — great for a date, a parent, anyone who wants the songs delivered clean. The Grove is the stand-up, sing-loud night — great for a crew, a cooler mentality, and a set list you'll be hoarse from the next morning. There's no wrong answer, only different Sundays.
