There is no venue on earth that looks like Duende at Silo City, and I've stopped trying to convince out-of-towners otherwise until they've stood there themselves. Buffalo took its most imposing ruins — the very structures that made it a boomtown — and put working musicians inside them. You are unmistakably in Buffalo, on the river, under the silos, and nowhere else.

While the waterfront's Terminal B series stacks touring headliners and Artpark fills the lawn, Duende quietly platforms the acoustic and improvised end of the scene — the stuff that needs a room willing to be weird and intimate rather than loud and enormous. That roster of local and regional players is doing the unglamorous work of keeping Buffalo's jazz and folk lineages breathing, in a setting that treats a Tuesday-night choro set with the same reverence a shed reserves for a reunion tour.
Seasonal is the operative word, so this is precisely the window to go — check Duende's calendar, grab something from Watu, and let a set unfold with the silos going dark against the sky. Bring a friend who thinks Buffalo is a hockey town and a chicken wing. Ten minutes into a set under those elevators, they'll never say it again.
