The Best Weekend of the Summer Is Hiding in Plain Sight: Guster, Groban, Osborne, and Beethoven
Some weekends you have to choose. This one, the Capital Region is just showing off — four cities, five venues, and a lineup that runs from acoustic indie-pop to Beethoven's Ninth without ever leaving the county lines.
Let's start with the one that sold this writer immediately. Guster (Acoustic) plays The Egg in Albany on Friday, Aug 14 at 8pm — the stripped-down configuration, in the Egg's freshly renovated shell, in a room designed so every seat is a good one. If you've only ever heard Guster loud, the acoustic set is the whole band turned inside out. Grab it.
Saratoga counter-programs hard. Caffè Lena runs Los Sugar Kings on Aug 14 at 8pm — Latin dance heat in a 110-seat folk room, which is exactly the kind of genre-smuggling Lena does best — and then hands Saturday to a legend: Joan Osborne plays two shows on Aug 15, at 5pm and 8pm. Yes, that Joan Osborne. Yes, in a room where you can see her breathe. Both are the kind of night people talk about for a decade.
Prefer your Saturday loud and glittery? Putnam Place has Kisstory on Aug 15 (with Untamed, Chris Sanders, and Modern Day) — a full KISS tribute spectacle a few blocks from the folk crowd, because Saratoga contains multitudes.
And then there's the mothership. Over at SPAC, the Philadelphia Orchestra residency is in full swing: Josh Groban: Stage, Screen & Symphony with the orchestra on Friday, Aug 14 at 7:30pm, followed by Beethoven's Ninth with Yannick on Saturday, Aug 15 at 7:30pm. These August SPAC dates are corroborated by the venue's official page — no preview-only asterisk here.
Why does this matter? Because on a single Friday night, within a twenty-minute drive, you can pick between Guster unplugged in a brutalist egg and Josh Groban fronting one of the world's great orchestras under the open sky. That's not a normal amount of options for a region our size. That's a scene operating at the top of its game.
My move: Guster Friday, Osborne's early Saturday show, then whatever my legs allow. Build your own. There are no wrong answers this weekend — only the tragedy of picking just one.
