This week the Walker Theatre inside the Tivoli Foundation's downtown footprint is going to test that theory from two very different directions, and Chattanooga would be foolish to pick just one.

Tuesday, Aug 11, PJ Morton walks in. If the name doesn't land immediately, the resume will: the New Orleans soul and R&B artist is a Grammy winner and — yes, that guy — the keyboardist for Maroon 5. Which means you've almost certainly heard his hands on a stadium hook without knowing his name. But Morton's own records are the real reason to buy a ticket. This is church-adjacent, keys-forward soul music, the kind built for a room where the back row can still see the sweat. The Walker, with its 851 seats and its historic bones, is exactly the scale that music wants. Stadiums flatten a voice like his. A theater sharpens it.

Then, because this week refuses to sit still, Saturday, Aug 15 hands the same stage to Squeeze. The British new-wave institution — the outfit that turned kitchen-sink heartbreak into some of the sharpest pop songwriting of its era — is a completely different animal, and that's the point. One night you're leaning into a soul falsetto; four nights later you're shouting along to hooks that have outlasted entire decades of musical fashion. Same red seats, wildly different room energy.
